Occupational identity, work, psychological distress and gender in management
Purpose This paper aims to examine the contribution of occupational identity and gender in explaining psychological distress among managers. It proposes and tests empirically a theoretical model that integrates identity theory into occupational stress and gender research. It analyses the proposition that a low level of verification of role identity is associated with a high level of psychological distress and that gender plays a moderating role i…
A multilevel analysis of the role personality play between work organization conditions and psychological distress
To intervene on work-related variables, organizations could reduce psychological demands, minimize the number of hours worked through job redesign, allow teleworking and encourage work schedule flexibility. To reduce job insecurity, organizations could explicitly communicate future organizational plans. In the same vein, decision authority could be targeted by reducing hierarchical steps and increasing autonomy. Lastly, the results pertaining to …
Psychological distress inequality between employed men and women
This study examines an exposure model in which the work and family stressors and the access to resources are gendered and contribute to explaining the psychological distress inequality between sex categories, both directly and indirectly through work-family conflict. A multilevel path analysis conducted on a random cross-sectional sample of 2026 Canadians workers from 63 establishments was performed. Our exposure model fully explains the higher l…

Sex, Gender Dynamics, Differential Exposure, and Work-Family Conflict
This study tested a differential exposure explanation of the association between sex categories and work-family conflict. It addresses the question of why men and women may experience similar or dissimilar levels of work-family conflict and tests whether differences are due to their different gendered demands and resources. Drawing from a sample of 1,751 employed adults from 63 workplaces, the results suggest that women spend less time in paid em…
The moderating role of personality traits in the relationship between work and salivary cortisol
Specific working conditions and certain personality traits are associated with variations in salivary cortisol concentrations. In addition, certain personality traits moderate the relationship between stressors and salivary cortisol concentrations. In conclusion, salivary cortisol concentrations at work seem to be modulated in part by personality traits

Gender differences in the age-cohort distribution of psychological distress in Canadian adults
Psychological distress is frequently used as an indicator of the mental health of a population. Overall, the mean level of distress is higher in women than in men and tends to decrease in both genders during adulthood. This pattern is primarily attributable to the differential exposure of women and men to specific risk factors over their lifetimes. However, the age distribution for distress may be confounded by a cohort effect. This study aimed t…
Psychological distress in the workforce
These results support our hypothesis that working in regulated occupations exerts a direct effect on mental health. These results also make clear the importance of developing new tools for measuring psychological distress among upper-level professional workers. Such tools will be much better suited to the realities characterising today's knowledge-based economies
Quantitative analysis of organizational culture in occupational health research
This study provides strong support for the use of the OCP scale for measuring organizational culture in population-based occupational health research in a way that is consistent with the Competing Values Framework. The Group organizational culture needs to be considered as a relevant factor in occupational health studies
Core Self-Evaluations, Work-Family Conflict, and Burnout
This study investigated how core self-evaluations relate to work-family (and family-work) conflict and burnout. Drawing from a sample of 289 police officers and civilian staff who were either married or living in a union as common-law partners, this study advances an empirical integration of work-family and core self-evaluations research. The results suggested that even when work, nonwork, and demographic variables are controlled for, positive co…

Work and High-Risk Alcohol Consumption in the Canadian Workforce
This study examined the associations between occupational groups; work-organization conditions based on task design; demands, social relations, and gratifications; and weekly high-risk alcohol consumption among Canadian workers. A secondary data analysis was performed on Cycle 2.1 of the Canadian Community Health Survey conducted by Statistics Canada in 2003. The sample consisted of 76,136 employees 15 years of age and older nested in 2,451 neigh…
Do occupation and work conditions really matter? A longitudinal analysis of psychological distress experiences among Canadian workers
This study analyses the relationship between occupation, work conditions and the experience of psychological distress within a model encompassing the stress promoted by constraints-resources embedded in macrosocial structures (occupational structure), structures of daily life (workplace, family, social networks outside the workplace) and agent personality (demography, physical health, psychological traits, life habits, stressful childhood events)…

Social structures, agent personality and workers' mental health
This study examines the role of occupations and work conditions in psychological distress with a model of social action in which psychological distress results from stress created by the constraintsresources of structures of daily life, macrosocial structures, and agent personality. Using longitudinal data from 6611 workers nested in 471 occupations, multilevel regression analyses confirm the model. Occupations account for 1.6 percent of the vari…

Alcohol use and misuse
Occupation and workplace harassment are important factors associated with alcohol use and misuse. The results support the theoretical model conceptualizing alcohol use and misuse as being the product of stress caused by constraints and resources brought to bear simultaneously by agent personality, structures of daily life, and macro social structures. Occupational alcohol researchers must expand their theoretical perspectives to avoid erroneous c…
