The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) is frequently used by professional counselors to assess Chicano or Mexican American clients in various mental health settings. • Replicated item level factor analysis of the full MMPI

James H Johnson, Cynthia H Null et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1984•Cited by: 6•References: 1

We completed a comprehensive factor analysis of the full MMPI item pool by using recent advances in computational facilities. Nearly 20,000 MMPI protocols were collected for the analysis, however, we discarded invalid records and protocols with more than 50 missing items. Analyses were computed on a developmental sample of 5,506 subjects and a cross-validation sample of 5,632. Twenty-one replicated factors were found by using an orthogonal varima…

Validity of an abbreviated 168-item administration and the standard MMPI was compared with reference to discriminating psychiatric patients from normal college students. Better discrimination was obtained from clinical scale scoring than from factor scoring. The abbreviated MMPI-168 actually produced slightly better discrimination than did the longer parent instrument. Revised equations for converting MMPI-168 scores to conventional MMPI validity…
