  • Sexual Identity Fluidity Among Sexual Minorities: Gender Differences in Determinants of Fluidity and Health-Related Outcomes

    Amanda K Baumle, Nasim Koohi•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2025•References: 64

Drawing upon the Generations Study, a longitudinal U.S. national probability survey, we examine sexual fluidity among 894 sexual minority adults over three waves of survey data. We find that plurisexual individuals (i.e. attracted to more than one gender) are more sexually fluid than are monosexual individuals, and those who hold more emergent sexual identities (e.g. asexual, same-gender loving, pansexual, and queer) are more sexually fluid than …

Scholars have recognized the role that legal intermediaries can play in shaping the law through their interpretations of legal ambiguity and guidance to rule-takers on legal compliance. Although legal intermediaries thus have the potential to effect social change, most research in the area of employment discrimination has focused on the way they facilitate only symbolic compliance with the law. In this article, we examine how the Equal Employment…

  • Legalizing LGBT Families: How the Law Shapes Parenthood

    Amanda K Baumle, D Compton et al.•BOOK•Legalizing LGBT families•2020

"The decision to have a child is seldom a simple one, often fraught with complexities regarding emotional readiness, finances, marital status, and compatibility with life and career goals. Rarely, though, do individuals consider the role of the law in facilitating or inhibiting their ability to have a child or to parent. For LGBT individuals, however, parenting is saturated with legality -- including the initial decision of whether to have a chil…

    Amanda K Baumle, M V Lee Badgett et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2020•Cited by: 12•References: 6

In 2013, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) began allowing anyone who believed that they experienced sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGI) discrimination to file charges of sex discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Very little is known about the impact of the EEOC's decision and whether it has enhanced protections for LGBT people. In this brief report, we present preliminary findings on trends and patterns…

    Amanda K Baumle•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 16

Lawyers who practice family law for LGBT clients are key players in the tenuous and evolving legal environment surrounding same-sex marriage recognition. Building on prior research on factors shaping the professional identities of lawyers generally, and activist lawyers specifically, I examine how practice within a rapidly changing, patchwork legal environment shapes professional identity for this group of lawyers. I draw on interviews with 21 LG…

  • Identity Versus Identification: How LGBTQ Parents Identify Their Children on Census Surveys

    Open Access•Amanda K Baumle, D Compton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 15

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals often rely on conceptions of family that fall outside of heteronormative definitions regarding blood or legal ties. As a consequence, there is a greater potential for conflict between family identities and identification options on survey instruments. Drawing on interviews with 100 LGBTQ parents, the authors examined conflicts between identity and identification faced by LGBTQ par…

Although some qualitative research has noted differences in gay and lesbian enclaves based on characteristics such as race and sex, in this article, we draw upon quantitative data from the U.S. Census to demonstrate the manner in which enclave formation is affected by the interaction of sexual orientation and other demographic characteristics (such as sex, race, age, and income). We focus our attention on enclaves located in three counties in the…

    Open Access•Amanda K Baumle, D Compton et al.•ARTICLE•Law & Policy•2011•Cited by: 7•References: 18

Faced with legal animus or outright legal prohibitions on adoption, fostering, or surrogacy, gay men and lesbians could be deterred from family formation. In this article, we use 2000 U.S. Census data to assess the validity of this assumption by examining the effect of positive and negative family laws on the presence of children in the households of same-sex unmarried partners. In doing so, we seek to assess whether formal law plays a central ro…

Objectives. Prior research has repeatedly shown that parenthood affects employment outcomes; mothers have, on average, lower wages and are less likely to be hired than childless women. Some research indicates that this effect of parenthood on employment outcomes is dependent on sexual orientation. In particular, lesbian mothers might be treated more like childless women by those making employment decisions. This article examines the degree to whi…

The phenomenon of statistical discrimination may take on increasing importance in the future as "traditional" prejudice-based discrimination slowly fades. This article considers how statistical discrimination compares with perspectives on discrimination in sociology, economics, and law. Statistical discrimination fits well with mainstream perspectives in economics, suggesting it is likely to be a common practice and endure even as racial prejudic…

Objective. The goal of this article is to develop and examine eight different scenarios in which the U.S. House of Representatives is reapportioned for the year 2000 on the basis of eight scenarios in which the apportionment population is differentially defined. In each scenario we adjust the 2000 apportionment population of each of the 50 states on the basis of various aspects of immigration, eligibility to vote, the overseas population, and sta…
