Mitochondrial DNA sequence analysis of ancient human remains found in a 2000-year-old elite Xiongnu cemetery in northeast Mongolia
The Xiongnu empire was a dominating nomadic tribe in the east of southern Siberia between the third century BC and first century AD. Archeological sites and artifacts of the Xiongu have been found primarily in Mongolia and scattered in Russia and the northern part of China. The historical sites are mainly tombs. Rectangular terrace tombs with satellite graves—small circular tombs around the main large terrace tombs—have been found throughout Xion…

Against the “American Century,” Toward a Third World New Left
Few Americans are so unknown yet emblematic of U.S.-Asia relations as the journalist Helen Mears. Lauded by contemporaries as a perceptive observer of Asia, Mears died in 1989 in relative obscurity. That seemed unlikely early in Mears’s career. At the age of twenty-nine, Mears became assistant editor for the liberal monthly, Survey Graphic. With graphic artist Rea Irvin and other luminaries, Mears helped found The New Yorker. Traveling across the…
The Interrogation Rooms of the Korean War
In this thought-provoking book, Monica Kim uses an iconic Korean War figure—the prisoner of war (Pow)—to illuminate Cold War decolonization in Asia. The Interrogation Rooms of the Korean War argues that the “forgotten war” was important for its escalation not only of Cold War politico-military tensions but also lesser-known sociocultural tensions, especially among Koreans, for whom the war climaxed a long, agonizing era of colonialism and anticol…
From Century of the Common Man to Yellow Peril
This article examines U.S. Vice President Henry A. Wallace’s Cold War dissent as a window into racial geopolitics in a post–World War II era of decolonization and U.S. global power. Focused on Wallace and the United States, the article uses a wide range of published and archival sources to argue that Wallace and U.S. anticolonial liberal elites saw anti-racist egalitarian pressures in the post-1945 international system as not only a threat, as ex…

A western Eurasian male is found in 2000‐year‐old elite Xiongnu cemetery in Northeast Mongolia
We analyzed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), Y‐chromosome single nucleotide polymorphisms (Y‐SNP), and autosomal short tandem repeats (STR) of three skeletons found in a 2,000‐year‐old Xiongnu elite cemetery in Duurlig Nars of Northeast Mongolia. This study is one of the first reports of the detailed genetic analysis of ancient human remains using the three types of genetic markers. The DNA analyses revealed that one subject was an ancient male skeleto…

A novel method of ancient DNA (aDNA) purification was developed using ion‐exchange columns to improve PCR‐amplifiable DNA extraction from ancient bone samples. Thirteen PCR‐resistant ancient bone samples aged 500–3,300 years were tested to extract aDNA using a recently reported, silica‐based aDNA extraction method and an ion‐exchange column method for the further purification. The PCR success rates of the aDNA extracts were evaluated for the ampl…
