Theories of Self‐Esteem
Self‐esteem refers to the overall positive or negative attitude an individual takes toward him or herself. Understanding self‐esteem also requires awareness of related terms, especially self and self‐concept, along with an appreciation of their similarities and differences. This entry discusses how self, self‐concept, and self‐esteem are causally related, and the outcomes typically the difference between global self‐esteem (e.g., the overall char…

GPA, Depression, and Drinking
Employing general strain theory, the authors examine gender differences in the dynamic strain-and-coping relations between GPA, depression, and drinking. Using longitudinal high school data from the Youth Development Study, the authors test five hypotheses. GPA negatively affects drinking (confirming Hypothesis 1), but without consistent gender differences (Hypothesis 1a). GPA also negatively affects depression (Hypothesis 2), and more strongly f…
Three Faces of Identity
We review three traditions in research on identity. The first two traditions, which stress (a) the internalization of social positions and their meanings as part of the self structure and (b) the impact of cultural meanings and social situations on actors' identities, are closely intertwined. The third, the burgeoning literature on collective identity, has developed quite independently of the first two and focuses more on group-level processes. U…

Self‐Esteem, Theories of
Self‐esteem refers to the overall positive or negative attitude an individual takes toward himself or herself. Understanding self‐esteem also requires awareness of related terms, especially self and self‐concept , along with an appreciation of their similarities and differences. Figure 1 illustrates how self, self‐concept, and self‐esteem are causally related, and the outcomes typically associated with self‐esteem. Although hierarchical in terms …
Deputy Editors' Note
In a departure from the norm, the outgoing deputy editors (Owens, Robinson, Sell), offer this deputy editors' note for the final issue of 2006, some two months after the untimely death of Editor Spencer E. Cahill. Dr. Cahill and his editorial team's tenure on the journal ends on December 31, 2006

Psychological Well-Being in the Early Life Course
Our analysis focuses on the implications of social status characteristics for children's psychological well-being. Drawing on social evaluation theories and stress-based explanations, we hypothesized that disadvantage cumulates across statuses (the double jeopardy hypothesis) and over time as children move into the adolescent years. To test this hypothesis, we estimated the independent and interactive effects of socioeconomic status, gender, and …

Deinstitutionalization, Social Rejection, and the Self-Esteem of Former Mental Patients
Modified labeling theorists have long argued that the stigma of mental illness has important consequences for the lives of people with mental illness. We propose that social rejection is an enduring force in the lives of people with mental illness and that these experiences are central to understanding the poor self-concepts described by many former psychiatric patients. We explore changes in a cohort of recently deinstitutionalized mental patien…
Self-Determination as a Source of Self-Esteem in Adolescence
This research examines the effects of the sense of self-determination in three spheres of male adolescents' lives (the family, the school, and the workplace) on positive self-esteem, using five waves of panel data from the Youth in Transition study (grade 10 to five years after high school). Though the self-concept literature has emphasized social sources of self-evaluation, these analyses point to the importance of generalization and attribution…
Leaving Home before Marriage
Two Dimensions of Self-Esteem
The presumed relationship between adolescent's self-esteem and the occurrence of social problems is a recurring theme in academic and public discourse. Evidence for this relationship is limited by an overreliance on global measures of self-esteem that combine positive and negative self-evaluations in a single measure. My study uses this prior research on the relationship of global measures of self-esteem to adolescent social problems as a compara…

The Effect of Post-High School Social Context on Self-Esteem
This study examines the effect of post-high school social context on self-concept development by assessing changes in positive self-esteem (i.e., self-confidence) in a national longitudinal sample of males who entered the full-time labor force, the active federal military, or college after high school. The data are from Bachman's Youth in Transition study of 2,213 American high school students in five data waves between 1966 and 1974. Estimation …
