Climate precarity in rural livelihoods
In recent decades, agrarian transformations in Southeast Asia have resulted in significant environmental and social change, yet insufficient attention has focused on the particular pathways by which these changes have increased vulnerability to climate change. In particular, climate precarity, a situation in which class, social, labour and/or gender inequities amplify negative impacts from climate change, has been on the rise for many smallholder…
Social differences in spatial perspectives about local benefits from rehabilitated mangroves
Change in mangrove extent and condition has potential consequences for social disparity in terms of who can adapt to change in ecosystem services and places perceived important for providing them. Participatory GIS can elicit spatial variation in the importance attached to ecosystem service places, but disaggregated research that can reveal difference over the small spatial extents often covered by mangroves is underdeveloped. Using mixed-methods…

This article examines the different practices of women and men in resource use and management, changes in access to and control over mangrove resources and the conflicts between those who have been able to capture nearly exclusive access and those who lost access as a result of the privatiza…

Summaries Although community?based natural resource management attracts international attention, it has not yet been widely implemented in Vietnam. In Vietnam, the main strategies have been centralised management by state agencies and private management by individual households. This article argues that the promotion of nationalisation or privatisation has not solved the problem of resource degradation and overexploitation, as illustrated by a ca…
