Domestic Homicide
Domestic homicide (DH) is the most extreme form of domestic violence (DV). There has been a growing worldwide interest in DH offenses and the characteristics of perpetrators and victims, and it is evidenced in part by the increase in the number of primary research studies in this area. The findings of a large number of the available primary literature have already been summarized into several systematic reviews. The principal purposes of this stu…

A Systematic Review of Public Housing, Poverty (De)Concentration, and Risk Behaviors
Mobility housing programs aim to deconcentrate poverty in public housing areas. Previous synthesis research results describe the potential negative impact of mobility programs on the physical and mental health of youth. The current systematic review aims to expand our knowledge of the effects of living in a public housing development and leaving public housing and moving to a new neighborhood on youth risk behaviors, including both general crime/…
Crisis intervention team training
The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model is an established training program used to improve police response to encounters involving persons with mental illness (PwMI). Diversion of PwMI from the criminal justice system to appropriate treatment providers in the community is one of the primary goals of CIT. The present study examines characteristics and outcomes of encounters between citizens experiencing mental health-related crises and CIT-traine…
Reaffirming Juvenile Justice
This book will expand students’ knowledge and understanding of the evolution of juvenile justice in the last 50 years. Designed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the landmark case In re Gault, which the U.S. Supreme Court decided in 1967, the authors provide a brief history of juvenile justice, then frame the developments and transformations that have occurred in the intervening years. Topics covered include an overview of the dramatic cha…
Sex Offender Recidivism Revisited
The effectiveness of sex offender treatment programs continues to generate misinformation and disagreement. Some literature reviews conclude that treatment does not reduce recidivism while others suggest that specific types of treatment may warrant optimism. The principal purpose of this study is to update the most recent meta-analyses of sex offender treatments and to compare the findings with an earlier study that reviewed the meta-analytic stu…
The Pre-Tenure Years
Pre-tenure faculty members often find it stressful and difficult to determine the best path to academic success in their new institution. This article offers an assessment, advice, and a perspective on the early stages of an academic career. Although there are variations in the types of institutions, programs, and departments, there are also similarities. Academic administrators and colleagues may be somewhat vague in their description of the exp…
Global War on Girls? Policing Girls’ Sexuality and Criminalizing Their Victimization
This article briefly explores the disconnect between the global discourse on girls’ issues, which really focuses on girls’ rights, and most particularly their right to be free from victimization, and the American focus on girls, which is far more concerned with bad or violent girls. Specifically, the article reviews the increase in girls’ arrests in the United States for offenses like simple assault and the concomitant increase in girls’ share of…
Mentoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice Doctoral Education
The importance of mentoring and supervising students has been a concern for criminal justice and criminology doctoral education. Doctoral students' perceptions on the impacts of mentoring have attracted scholarly attention, but little attention has focused specifically on faculty perspectives. This study reports survey results from 21 doctoral coordinators in criminology and criminal justice doctoral programs. Topics include the prevalence of bot…
Crime Control, Politics & Policy
This book reviews concepts, information and points of view that help to explain the context and constraints of the criminal justice system. The chapters summarize developments in public policy and crime control, and interweave themes central to the discussion: the impact of ideology, the role of the media, and the politicization of crime and criminal justice.
Comparative/International Research on Women and Crime
Despite the recent advocacy of comparative/international and collaborative research by the leaders in the field of criminology and criminal justice, there is uncertainty regarding how much comparative/international research on the topic of women is being conducted. Using the published abstracts of papers presented at the American Society of Criminology (ASC) Annual Meeting and the European Society of Criminology (ESC) Annual Meeting, the authors …
The impact of community policing on crime rates
This study utilized three major data-sets consisting of Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics 2003, two waves of Uniform Crime Report data, and the US Census 2000 data to examine whether the relationship between community policing and crime differs based on the agency size. To operationalize community policing, the authors employed factor analyses. The results yielded three dimensions for the construct of community policing. Th…
In Her Own Voice
We conducted a content analysis of presentations on women, crime, and criminal justice at the annual meetings of the American Society of Criminology from 1999 through 2008 to determine not only the range of topics that were presented on women and crime but also who made the presentations. By focusing on presentations of research on women, crime, and criminal justice, we attempt to determine whether these areas are more or less likely to be recogn…
Policing in Korea
Although women account for over 50% of employed persons in South Korea, women in policing comprise approximately 3.8% of all sworn law enforcement positions throughout the country. Clearly, women are underrepresented in policing in many countries, but the relatively small number in law enforcement careers in Korea provides an opportunity for research about the demographic and attitudinal factors that motivate them to pursue such a career. In this…

A preliminary study of student attitudes on juvenile justice policy
The philosophy and practice of juvenile justice have experienced significant transformations in the last 100 years. A shift to “get tough” attitudes has prompted various legislative reforms and has changed if not hardened attitudes toward youth. In context of these policy developments and social attitudes, this paper summarizes a preliminary study of 1104 undergraduate students on their attitudes on juvenile justice policies in the United States.…
Strategies to meet the educational needs of non-traditional graduate students
This paper examines some of the issues involved in offering graduate programs that meet the educational needs of nontraditional graduate students. The strengths and weaknesses of two models—a weekend program and a satellite program—are reviewed, and the impact of technology on these models is discussed. We also make recommendations for developing successful alternative graduate programs. The discussion includes the characteristics of the student …
