Content, quality, gaps and needs in sexuality education in Canada: A national survey of sexuality and gender minority youth
Comprehensive sexuality education is associated with a wide range of improved health and social outcomes. However, the quality and scope of sexual health education in Canada varies, with particular gaps for sexuality and gender minority (SGM) young people. Using quantitative data drawn from a national survey of 463 SGM youth (aged 15–29) in Canada, we explored the quality and scope of the sexuality education received and identified gaps. Only 25.…
Measuring gender modality: Comparing strategies and methods from the “Understanding Affirming Communities, Relationships, & Networks” youth survey
Self-Perceived Reasons for Suicide Attempts in Sexual and Gender Minorities in Canada
The aim of this study was to examine the self-perceived reasons of suicide attempts among sexual and gender minorities (SGM). We surveyed SGM living in Canada (n = 2778) and respondents who had attempted suicide answered open-ended questions about their perceived reason(s) of their first/only attempt (FOA) and last attempt (LA) (for those who attempted multiple times). Responses were double-coded and categorized as discrete findings. A quarter (2…
Mitigating invalid data bias in the estimation of sexual orientation disparities in a survey of youth in US and Canada
The current commentary explored the applicability of the methods described in “Mitigating invalid and mischievous survey responses: A registered report examining risk disparities between heterosexual and lesbian, gay, bisexual, or questioning youth” by Dr. Joseph Cimpian and colleagues to explore sexual orientation disparities in preexisting data from a nonprobability sample. Understanding Affirming Communities, Relationships, and Networks was a …
Trends in mental health and smoking disparities between sexual minority and heterosexual adults in Canada, 2003–2020
Sexual minority populations experience a higher burden of mental health and substance use/misuse conditions than heterosexual comparators-a health inequality that has predominantly been attributed to forms of minority stress experienced by the former group. Sexual minority-affirming legislative and policy advances, as well as improvements in social attitudes toward sexual minorities in recent decades, should presumably reduce experiences of minor…
Acceptability of integrating mental health and substance use care within sexual health services among young sexual and gender minority men in Vancouver, Canada
Our findings highlight that SGM men's sexual health, mental health and substance use-related health needs and preferences are interrelated and should be addressed together. Tailored training and resources as well as structural adaptations to improve communication channels and collaborative connections between health providers are required to facilitate the development of integrated care for young SGM men
Knowledge gaps in existing research exploring sexual fluidity and mental health among young adults
While there is a large body of evidence indicating that sexual minority youth experience inequitably high rates of mental health problems (eg, depression, suicidality), we know little about how temporal changes in sexual attractions, identities and behaviour may impact mental health (and other) outcomes. In this essay, we review existing research regarding sexual fluidity and mental health among young adults in order to identify critical knowledg…
Trends in Bullying Victimization and Social Unsafety for Sexually and Gender Diverse Students
Research has documented trends in bullying victimization for sexually diverse adolescents in the US, but trends regarding school social unsafety are understudied and there is a dearth of research examining these trends for gender diverse adolescents. This study aimed to identify disparities in bullying victimization and feelings of social unsafety in schools for sexually and gender diverse adolescents. Data stem from the 2014 ( N = 15,800; M age …
The rise of anti-trans laws and the role of public health advocacy
Conformity to Masculinity Norms and Mental Health Outcomes Among Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Two-Spirit, and Queer Men and Non-Binary Individuals
Homophobia and biphobia negatively impact the mental health of gay, bisexual, trans, Two-Spirit, and queer men and non-binary individuals (GBT2Q) and sexual and gender minority men, but little is known about the impact of gender-related oppression. The current study examines the impact of pressure to conform to masculine norms in Canada-based GBT2Q individuals. Specifically, the associations between (a) gender expression and pressure to be mascul…
“It saves lives”: Peer support and resilience in transgender and gender diverse communities
Transgender (trans) and gender diverse (TGD) populations continue to experience significant inequities in social and health outcomes, often in connection with the systemic exposure of these groups to violence, stigma, and discrimination. Despite the promising role of peer support in mitigating adverse impacts of marginalization, this phenomenon remains under-examined. In this study, which is informed methodologically by an abductive approach to g…
Moderation of the association between Covid-19-related income loss and depression by receipt of financial support: Repeated cross-sectional surveys of young adults in Canada and France (2020–2021)
Association between income loss and depression was moderated by receipt of family/friends financial support but not by receipt of government financial support. Financial support interventions may help to mitigate the negative effects of income loss on young adults mental health during periods of economic crisis
Using photovoice to understand experiences of opioid use among sexual and gender minority youth in Vancouver, Canada
In Canada, sexual and gender minority youth use opioids at disproportionately high rates. Yet, little is known about the distinct contexts of opioid use within this group, challenging capacity to develop well founded policy and practice supports. This case study aims to examine - in depth - the experiences and contexts of opioid use among a sample of four sexual and gender minority youth in Vancouver, Canada. Qualitative data from photovoice meth…
Cost‐related avoidance of oral health service utilization among lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals in Canada
CROHSA is elevated for bisexual individuals relative to heterosexual individuals. Targeted interventions should be explored to improve oral healthcare access among this population. Future research should assess the role of minority stress and social safety on oral health inequities among sexual minority groups
Strong community belonging moderates poor mental health in lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals living in Canada: An intersectional analysis of a national population-based survey
How do sexual and gender minority people acquire the capability for suicide? Voices from survivors of near-fatal suicide attempts
Despite well-documented disparities by sexual and gender minority (SGM) status in suicide attempt and mortality rates, few studies have investigated the lived experiences that contribute to SGM people's disproportionate risk of suicide. Having a history of at least one near-fatal (or medically serious) suicide attempt serves as a proxy for suicide mortality, but no known study has involved SGM people who have made such an attempt. Ideation-to-act…
Overcoming Conversion Therapy: A Qualitative Investigation of Experiences of Survivors

Cisheteronormativity, Conversion Therapy, and Identity Among Sexual and Gender Minority People: A Narrative Inquiry and Creative Non-fiction
Sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) navigate systems of oppression that reify cisgender and heterosexual norms (cisheteronormativity) while developing their identities. 'Conversion therapy' represents a particularly prominent and harmful threat in this landscape. We explore how SGM who experienced conversion therapy develop their identities to understand antecedents to mental health struggles in this population. In-depth interviews were conducted…
You Could Tell I Said the Wrong Things: Constructions of Sexual Identity Among Older Gay Men in Healthcare Settings
Older gay men commonly conceal their sexual identity in healthcare settings due to past experiences and expectations of encountering stigma and discrimination in these contexts. Although insights on how older gay men construct their sexual identity in healthcare may help contextualize this phenomenon, this question remains under-explored. Accordingly, we present the findings of a secondary grounded theory analysis of individual interview data, wh…
They Haven't Made a Slot for Us Yet: Conceptualizing the Health Care and Social Service Needs of Older Gay Men Living with HIV in Canada
In this paper, we present the findings of a qualitative study aimed at conceptualizing the service needs of aging gay men living with HIV (GMLH). Our analysis is based on interview data from 16 gay-identified men living with HIV, ages 50 and over. Drawing on a framework of intersectionality, which theoretically accounts for interlocking expressions of marginalization in groups affected by multiple systems of oppression, we highlight the practical…
Correlates of suicidal ideation related to the Covid-19 Pandemic: Repeated cross-sectional nationally representative Canadian data
With significant levels of mental distress reported by populations, globally, the magnitude of suicidal ideation during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic is a central concern. The goal of this study was to quantify the extent of pandemic-related suicidal ideation in the Canadian population during the first ten months of the pandemic and identify sociodemographic and pandemic-related stressors associated with increased risk of ideation. Data were d…
Recent Suicide Attempts Across Multiple Social Identities Among Gay and Bisexual Men: An Intersectionality Analysis
This study draws from intersectionality to describe variations in recent suicide attempts (RSA) among gay and bisexual men (GBM) across sociodemographics. Using survey data, logistic regression modeling explored RSA in two analytical stages: (1) the individual effects of each sociodemographic were measured; (2) two-way interaction terms between sociodemographics were tested and added to the models created in stage A. In stage A, only education an…
Constructing and Expanding Suicide Narratives From Gay Men
In this study, we document life stories of gay men who attempted suicide as adults. Our goal is to expand the collection of narratives used to understand this persistent health inequity. We interviewed seven adult gay men, each of whom had attempted suicide two to four times, and identified five narratives. Pride narratives resist any connection between sexuality and suicide. Memorial narratives prevent suicide by maintaining a strong sense of "p…
They Want You to Kill Your Inner Queer but Somehow Leave the Human Alive”: Delineating the Impacts of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression Change Efforts
Sexual orientation and gender identity and expression change efforts (SOGIECE) aim to suppress the sexual and gender identities of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and other queer (2SLGBTQ+) people. Exposure to SOGIECE is associated with significant psychosocial morbidity. Yet, there is a dearth of knowledge specifying the ways in which these psychosocial impacts are produced and experienced. This qualitative interpretive description st…

Suicide Prevention From the Perspectives of Gay, Bisexual, and Two-Spirit Men
Although gay, bisexual, and two-spirit men (GBTSM) experience high rates of suicidality, there have been few empirical studies of prevention initiatives and policies that could address or reverse this major social problem. This article reports on a photovoice study of 29 GBTSM who had a history of suicidality or lost a fellow GBTSM to suicide. We focused our analysis on participants' perspectives on suicide prevention. Participants described four…

Concealment of Sexual Minority Identities in Interviewer-Administered Government Surveys and Its Impact on Estimates of Suicide Ideation Among Bisexual and Gay Men
Bisexual and gay men are at increased risk of suicide ideation. Characterizing this risk requires self-disclosure of sexual identities; however, many will conceal their identity when interviewed. The authors investigated the impact of the resulting information bias within the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS). Expected probabilities of disclosure were derived from a community-based survey of bisexual and gay men, stratified by sexual identi…

Ambivalence and the biopolitics of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) implementation
Ambivalence, the vacillation between conflicting feelings and thoughts, is a key characteristic of scientific knowledge production and emergent biomedical technology. Drawing from sociological theory on ambivalence, we have examined three areas of debate surrounding the early implementation of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, for gay, bisexual, queer, and other men who have sex with men in Canada, including epistemology and praxis, clinical…
It is time to mobilize suicide prevention for sexual and gender minorities in Canada
Suicide is a significant health issue among sexual and gender minority adults (SGMA); yet, there are no tailored suicide prevention programs for these marginalized populations in Canada. We hosted two world cafés with community leaders, health professionals, policymakers, and researchers to identify recommendations for mobilizing SGMA-focused suicide prevention programs. We identified five priorities: (1) make society safer for sexual and gender …

Suicide and HIV as leading causes of death among gay and bisexual men: A comparison of estimated mortality and published research
Gay and bisexual men experience numerous health disparities relative to heterosexual men, including high rates of HIV and suicidal behavior. Systematic community health assessments could provide direct comparisons of the burden of mortality across diseases and thus facilitate the prioritization of public health activities; however, such assessments have been precluded by the absence of sexual orientation information in vital statistics records. I…

Stigma and suicide among gay and bisexual men living with HIV
HIV positive gay and bisexual men (GBM) continue to struggle with the pervasiveness of HIV stigma, but little is known about the health effects of stigma. In this article, suicidal ideation and attempts are measured among GBM living with HIV, evaluating the extent to which these experiences are associated with stigma and suicide. Drawing from an online national survey of Canadian GBM completed by 7995 respondents, a sub-set of data provided by re…
Combining intersectionality and syndemic theory to advance understandings of health inequities among Canadian gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men
Syndemics (socially produced intertwined epidemics) of psychosocial issues have been shown empirically to increase the risk of HIV infection among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM). However, to intervene effectively identifying those who are most vulnerable is critically important. Using an intersectionality framework, this study analyzed data drawn from 8490 Canadian GBM respondents to an online survey to evaluate demograph…
