Examining the Role of Student Engagement on the Relation Between Dual Enrollment and College Persistence or Transfer
School-level competition for US high school extracurricular resources
Bullying Victimization and Digital Self-Harm: The Moderating Role of Parental Attachment
Study Abroad Enhances Cognitive Development
The authors examined the influence of study-abroad participation on the cognitive development of students across 17 institutions. Even after adjusting for several important potential confounding influences such as student precollege characteristics, college academic and nonacademic experiences, study-abroad intent, and a pretest measure for each outcome measure, the authors found that study-abroad participation enhanced students’ end-of-4th-year …
A Letter From the Editors: The Past, Present, and Future of Educational Researcher
The Outcomes of the American Renaissance Student
As standardized tests continue to wane in the influence of college admissions, higher education institutions use other sociocultural and academic signals to determine the “right” fit for their institution. Extracurricular activities (EAs) that students and parents cultivate throughout high school help provide these signals. Though researchers typically consider the intensity (total hours) and breadth (number of EAs) in their analyzes, few conside…
The Role of Parental Education on College Students’ Participation in Outside-the-Classroom Activities
Through outside-the-classroom activities (OCA), college students accumulate currencies for graduate school or the workforce. Because parents’ education level may foster both the ability and predisposition to participate in OCA, insight into its connection to this type of participation may help practitioners and policymakers tailor students’ campus involvement better. Although the authors found few parental-education differences in student partici…
Participation in High-Impact Practices: Considering the Role of Institutional Context and a Person-Centered Approach
Does Collaborative Learning Influence Persistence to the Second Year of College
The purpose of this study was to determine whether engaging in collaborative learning influences persistence to the 2nd year of college among 2,987 college freshmen at 19 institutions. Considering potential confounders such as sex, race, precollege academic ability, type of institution attended, college coursework taken, academic motivation, and the clustered nature of the data, those students who engage in collaborative learning are significantl…
The Role of Academic Motivation and Engagement on the Relationship between Dual Enrollment and Academic Performance
I examine whether academic motivation and engagement—-conditions that advocates consider mechanisms for the effect of dual enrollment—-account for the relationship between dual enrollment and academic performance. Few studies examine the claimed mechanisms that account for the impact of dual enrollment, which leaves the processes through which dual enrollment influences a student's college experience as a black box. Using data from the Wabash Nat…
Race, Friends, and College Readiness: Evidence from the High School Longitudinal Study
The role of social desirability bias and racial/ethnic composition on the relation between education and attitude toward immigration restrictionism
Social scientists note individuals tend to respond favorably to sensitive topics in surveys, but few consider factors triggering these responses. This study uses unique data to examine respondents' racial/ethnic attitude under direct and indirect modes of elicitation. In particular, the list experiment provides a cloak of anonymity to a random subsample of individuals that allows them to respond truthfully about their racial/ethnic attitudes. By …
