Temperament in Middle Childhood: Relation to Childhood Happiness and to Happiness and Health Entering Middle Adulthood
Latent profile analysis of adolescent temperament: Relations to happiness and health in adulthood
INTRODUCTION: This study provides long-term evidence that profiles of temperament during adolescence are associated with happiness and health over two decades later. METHODS: Data are based on the ongoing Fullerton Longitudinal Study, a community-based sample in the United States. At 14 and 16 years, adolescents (N = 111; 52% male, 90% Euro-American) and their mothers (N = 105) completed the Dimensions of Temperament Survey-Revised, a scale desig…
Simultaneous Linking of Cross-Informant and Longitudinal Data Involving Positive Family Relationships
Measurement invariance is a prerequisite when comparing different groups of individuals or when studying a group of individuals across time. This assures that the same construct is assessed without measurement artifacts. This investigation applied a novel approach of simultaneous parameter linking to cross-sectional and longitudinal measures of the construct of positive family relationships. Previously, a scale to measure this construct in mother…
Applying the Nominal Response Model Within a Longitudinal Framework to Construct the Positive Family Relationships Scale
A psychometric analysis was conducted using the nominal response model under the item response theory framework to construct the Positive Family Relationships scale. Using data from the Fullerton Longitudinal Study, this scale was constructed within a long-term longitudinal framework spanning middle childhood through adolescence. Items tapping this construct were completed annually by mothers when children were aged 9 to 17 years. The scale measu…
Parental Provision of Early Literacy Environment as Related to Reading and Educational Outcomes Across the Academic Lifespan
SYNOPSISObjective. The quantity of time mothers read to their young children and the print environment in their homes were examined for their relations to reading achievement and intrinsic motivation across the school years and to educational attainment in adulthood. Design. Data from the 28-year Fullerton Longitudinal Study were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results. Controlling for mothers’ education and the direct relation betwe…
A Transactional Model of Parental Involvement and Children's Achievement from Early Childhood through Adolescence
SYNOPSIS Objective. In a longitudinal study, researchers examined the transactional relations between two types of parental home involvement, academic instruction and academic socialization, and children's reading achievement from early childhood through adolescence. Academic instruction involves one-on-one interactions between parent and child that target the development of specific academic skills, and academic socialization involves parents' p…
A Long-Term Investigation of the Role of Maternal and Dual-Earner Employment in Children's Development: The Fullerton Longitudinal Study
This article presents an overview of the major issues investigated in a longitudinal study of development from infancy through early adulthood regarding the relationships between maternal and dual-earner employment and children's development. Based on the results of this extensive and long-term study, as well as integrating the results of other researchers, the authors advance a developmental impingement and family adaptation perspective to guide…
Continuity of academic intrinsic motivation from childhood through late adolescence: A longitudinal study.
Two aspects of continuity, stability of individual differences and means, were examined in a longitudinal study from the middle elementary through the high school years. Two hypotheses regarding individual-difference stability were supported with structural equation modeling in both the general-verbal and math domains: (a) Academic intrinsic motivation is a stable construct throughout these years, and (b) with advancement in age, academic intrins…
Redefining Families: Implications for Children's Development
Introduction: Demography and Changing Families (A.E. Gottfried, A.W. Gottfried). Alternative Families and Children's Development: Primary Caregiving Fathers in Intact Familes (N. Radin). Redefining Families: Implications for Children’s Development
Gifted IQ: Early Developmental Aspects - The Fullerton Longitudinal Study
Academic intrinsic motivation in young elementary school children.
Two studies, 1 longitudinal and 1 cross-sectional, demonstrate that for young elementary school children, academic intrinsic motivation is a reliable, valid, and significant construct. Findings are discussed with regard to developmental theories of intrinsic motivation and the significance of academic intrinsic motivation for children's education

Effects of instructions and stimulus representation on selective learning in children
Selective learning patterns of children were investigated using incidental learning methodology. Since incidental, in contrast to intentional learning occurs in the absence of instructions which prepare the subject for later retention tests, a subject has relatively more freedom to choose to attend to and learn only a portion of the presented information (thus exercising selectivity). Previous research suggested that selectivity seemed to increas…
Influence of Social Power vs Status Envy Modeled Behaviors on Children's Preferences for Models
Social power and Whiting's status envy theory were compared for their effects on children's model preferences. Kindergarten children observed a show in which neuter gender puppets exhibited behaviors dictated by these theories. Statistical analyses showed that: (a) sex was not associated with model preference and (b) the status envy model was significantly preferred by Ss. It was concluded that models who dispense both positive and negative reinf…
