Broca's Area and Language Processing: Evidence for the Cognitive Control Connection
A long-standing pursuit in cognitive neuropsychology has been to understand the role of Broca's area in language processing. Although a prevailing view has been to equate this region with grammatical abilities in both production and comprehension, a host of recent evidence from brain imaging and patient research has revealed a rather general role for this patch of cortex in complex cognition, even when grammatical performance is untapped-namely, …
Cognition Without Control: When a Little Frontal Lobe Goes a Long Way
The prefrontal cortex is crucial for the ability to regulate thought and control behavior. The development of the human cerebral cortex is characterized by an extended period of maturation during which young children exhibit marked deficits in cognitive control. We contend that prolonged prefrontal immaturity is, on balance, advantageous and that the positive consequences of this developmental trajectory outweigh the negative. Particularly, we ar…
Cognitive control and parsing: Reexamining the role of Broca’s area in sentence comprehension
Role of left inferior prefrontal cortex in retrieval of semantic knowledge: A reevaluation
A number of neuroimaging findings have been interpreted as evidence that the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) subserves retrieval of semantic knowledge. We provide a fundamentally different interpretation, that it is not retrieval of semantic knowledge per se that is associated with left IFG activity but rather selection of information among competing alternatives from semantic memory. Selection demands were varied across three semantic tasks in…
