  • The Wide Lens in Archaeology

Open Access•Jeffrey A Blakely, Inbar Ktalav et al.•BOOK•Wide Lens in Archaeology•2017

This book honors the memory of Brian Hesse, a scholar of Near Eastern archaeology, a writer of alliterative and punned publication titles, and an accomplished amateur photographer. Hesse specialized in zooarchaeology, but he influenced a wider range of excavators and ancient historians with his broad interpretive reach. He spent much of his career analyzing faunal materials from different countries in the Middle East-including Iran, Yemen, and Is…

  • Data Sharing Reveals Complexity in the Westward Spread of Domestic Animals across Neolithic Turkey

Open Access•Benjamin S Arbuckle, Sarah Whitcher Kansa et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2014

This study presents the results of a major data integration project bringing together primary archaeozoological data for over 200,000 faunal specimens excavated from seventeen sites in Turkey spanning the Epipaleolithic through Chalcolithic periods, c. 18,000-4,000 cal BC, in order to document the initial westward spread of domestic livestock across Neolithic central and western Turkey. From these shared datasets we demonstrate that the westward …

Open Access•Levent Atici, Levent Atıcı et al.•BOOK•Current Research at Kultepe/Kanesh•2014

This book contains revised versions of papers presented at a special session that took place during the 2012 meeting of ASOR, dedicated to the celebrated site of Kultepe, the urban center of the second millennium BCE state of Kanesh in Anatolia. The material remains and the more than 23,500 cuneiform tablets unearthed at the site shed light on social, political, and economic aspects of the Middle Bronze age (MBA; c. 2000-1700 years BC) in central…

  • Initial diversity in sheep and goat management in Neolithic south-western Asia

Benjamin S Arbuckle, Levent Atici et al.•ARTICLE•Levant•2013

In this paper we survey a large body of faunal data for the practice of young male culling in Neolithic south-western Asia. Although the young male kill-off model is one of the most widely used models for identifying animal domestication in Neolithic south-western Asia, its ubiquity has never been addressed on a regional scale. By focusing on a combination of kill-off age and the shape of the distributions of biometric data, we are able to addres…

    Levent Atici, Levent Atıcı•ARTICLE•Hunter Gatherer Research•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 25

The results of a zooarchaeological analysis on seven archaeofaunal assemblages from Karain B and Öküzini caves help us to develop a high-resolution picture of Terminal Pleistocene animal exploitation patterns (ca 20,000-13,500 calibrated BP) in the western Taurus Mountains of Mediterranean Turkey. The Epipalaeolithic subsistence in this area can be characterised as stable specialised caprine hunting complemented by fallow deer hunting between 19,…
