    Open Access•Yuko Nonoyama‐tarumi•ARTICLE•Education Policy Analysis Archives•2023

I draw on Dewey’s concept of democratically constituted society to investigate whether Japanese schools are organized in a way that students can experience democratic living, by examining diversity and interaction within schools. I also rely on Reimer’s notion of citizenship education to explore whether schools in Japan foster the competencies necessary to understand, care about, and act upon global challenges, by examining the teaching of releva…

  • Schooling Selves: Autonomy, Interdependence, and Reform in Japanese Junior High Education

    Yuko Nonoyama‐tarumi, Yuko Nonoyama-Tarumi•ARTICLE•Social Science Japan Journal•2017

In this book, Peter Cave focuses on the educational reforms in the 1990s and 2000s in Japan, detailing how the reform discourses and policy measures played out in junior high school education in Japan. This research is a synthesis of studies carried out in 18 countries to identify contributions of education for sustainable development (ESD) to quality education. Five common questions were used for the interviews in each country to solicit education leaders and practitioners’ views on the outcome and implementation of ESD. The analysis revealed that major themes repeated across the 18 studies, showing that ESD contributes in many ways to quality…

While the importance of attending early learning programmes is increasingly evident, the provision of early learning programmes in developing countries has not grown in parallel.
