A Model for the Analysis of Fighting Spirit in the British Army
Military human groups can be considered special in many ways because of the unique requirement that they should operate effectively under extreme stress, and indeed continue to do so even after suffering sudden and traumatic reduction through casualties. Military sociology and military psychology are well-established academic disciplines. However, one potentially fruitful area has largely been neglected: this is the approach of the social anthrop…
The "leaning song" - a weapon in organizational conflict
Purpose- The purpose of this paper is to present an insider ethnographic account of a series of social confrontations between two mutually opposed groups of officers that took place in an officers' mess in a remote military garrison in the 1980s. The identity of one of these groups was expressed in a particular song that was sung frequently and noisily in the mess. The analysis of these incidents and their precursors provides an understanding of …
Orders is orders . . . aren’t they? Rule bending and rule breaking in the British Army
In common with all professional armies, the British Army is a disciplined force. There is a sharply stratified rank structure and formal rules abound. However, in this article I seek to provide a more nua…
Group Cohesion, Culture, and Practice
Anthony King's 'The Word of Command: Communication and Cohesion in the Military' formed part of an ongoing debate in this journal on military group cohesion. For him, the main vector for cohesion is collective military practice in training and operations, which he sees as a precursor to social relationships. In his critique, Guy Siebold drew attention to social psychology's approach through the 'standard model.' In this article, the author sugges…
Postmodernist Command: A Contradiction in Terms for the British Army
Prehistoric agriculture in the Belize River valley
Enquiry was directed into possible food sources for the dense prehistoric Maya population of the Belize River valley. A small amount of evidence was found to suggest tree‐cropping, and aerial investigations revealed a network of linear depressions in the ground. This network was not natural in origin, though natural creeks formed part of the system. These ‘linear field indentations’ seem to be the remains of an ancient agricultural technique, whi…
