Enquiry was directed into possible food sources for the dense prehistoric Maya population of the Belize River valley. A small amount of evidence was found to suggest tree‐cropping, and aerial investigations revealed a network of linear depressions in the ground. This network was not natural in origin, though natural creeks formed part of the system. These ‘linear field indentations’ seem to be the remains of an ancient agricultural technique, which utilized water that flowed across the land from the surrounding hills towards the river
