Addendum to Problems and Benefits of Bird Ownership
Because several recent studies suggested that adults who fed only wild birds would report having different problems and benefits than did pet bird owners who also fed wild birds, and pet bird only owners, the present study added data to clarify such differences. 150 adults were selected so that 50 persons (25 men and 25 women) each were classified into one of three groups: those who only owned pet birds, those who owned pet birds and also fed wil…
Benefits, Problems, and Characteristics of Home Aquarium Owners
Although tank fish are currently the most popular “pets” in the USA, literature reporting studies on the benefits, problems, and characteristics of home aquarium ownership is extremely limited. Because it seemed important to learn more about people who enjoy owning and caring for home aquaria, 50 men and 50 women were interviewed in several area stores which provide and sell living fish and adjunct products necessary for maintaining good home aqu…
General Attitudes Toward and Knowledge About the Importance of Ocean Life
To evaluate the amount of awareness and quality of knowledge about ocean life the average American possesses 100 men and 100 women were asked what they knew about the importance of the oceans, their attitudes toward protection of marine life and oceanic ecology, and their sources of information regarding oceans. 98% believed that oceans are necessary for human survival and 92% believed that marine life was essential to the over-all ecology. 89% b…
Problems and Benefits of Bird Ownership
Because research literature on human and avian interactions is limited, it seemed important to investigate the benefits and liabilities of pet-bird ownership. It was hypothesized that most pet bird owners would have other pet animals in addition to birds, that one-fifth of owners would have owned pet birds during childhood or adolescence, that they would report their birds provided physical and verbal companionship, and that most would admit to t…
Changes in the Behavior of Pet Owners across Generations
200 adults (100 men and 100 women with a mean age of 58.8 yr.) were interviewed to assess the associations of recollections about their grandparents' and parents' attitudes and their adults' attitudes and behaviors toward pets. Subjects were categorized into Never-owned pets, Always-owned pets, Owned-in-childhood-only, and Owned-in-adulthood-only groups ( ns = 25). Subjects were asked about their present and past ownership and experiences, and th…
Aquarium Visitors' Perceptions and Attitudes toward the Importance of Marine Biodiversity
To study people's perceptions and attitudes toward the importance of marine biodiversity, 102 visitors to San Francisco's UnderWater World aquarium were interviewed about their perceptions, attitudes, and knowledge about marine life and the environment needed for survival. They were asked about any changes in perceptions and attitudes after their visit. The data indicate that most visitors had very Little education in marine biology, that 84% had…

Characteristics and Motivations of Docents in Wildlife Education
Because childhood experiences with pets and wildlife help develop positive attitudes toward animals, educators who can teach the importance of protective maintenance of wildlife and environment to coming generations are needed. The characteristics and motives of 55 volunteer docents in wildlife education (9 men, 46 women) were assessed through telephone interviews. The data indicate that such actively involved docents had great concern for wildli…
Children's Drawings and Attachment to Pets
To help confirm the concept that distances placed between the self and other figures in children's drawings represent emotional distances, 242 pet-owning and 35 nonpet-owning kindergartners through eighth graders drew pictures of themselves, a pet, and/or a family member. Owners drew pets significantly closer than family-figures although the younger the child, the greater the distance between self and pet. Older children drew themselves holding p…
Developmental Factors in Positive Attitudes toward Zoo Animals
Research suggests that attitudes toward animals are established through childhood experiences. Currently, educational wildlife experiences for most urban children are available only at zoos and wildlife parks. To clarify the cognitive and emotional effects of distance, visibility, and tactile stimulation generated by various ways of exhibiting animals, 308 parents and their 3- to 7-year-old children were interviewed in Main Zoo and Petting Zoo ar…
Benefits and Liabilities of Pets for the Homeless
Observations in the streets and parks of San Francisco East Bay cities and suburbs suggested that many of the homeless people own and maintain pet animals in spite of circumstances and environmental conditions. Accordingly, 105 homeless adult men and women, half of whom owned pets, were interviewed for this pilot study. Responses indicated that homeless pet-owners were extremely attached to their pets and had owned significantly more pets during …
Loneliness and Pet Ownership among Single Women
Relationships among loneliness, pet ownership, and attachment were studied in a sample of 148 adult female students, 59 pet owners and 89 nonowners. A sample of 100 adult cat owners participated in a mail survey designed to investigate various aspects of attachment to feline companions. 54 respondents were members of a nationwide computer cat club and 46 were attenders at a cat show in Anaheim, California. 92% of respondents reported preferring cats to all other pets citing ease of care, affection and companionship, and personality as the main reasons. A mean self-rated attachment score of 9.…
Veterinarians and Successful Pet Adoptions
Because Kidd, Kidd, and George in 1992 reported that owners' ignorance of species-specific animal behaviors, unrealistic expectations for the roles pets play in their children's lives, and expense and time required for ownership and caretaking are major reasons why many cats and dogs are adopted from humane societies and then rejected each year, it is important to assess whether better education of prospective adopters increases retention of pets…

Successful and Unsuccessful PET Adoptions
To investigate possible reasons why millions of cats and dogs are adopted and then rejected each year, 120 male and 223 female adopters from the San Francisco Bay Area shelters completed George's Pet Expectations Inventory, which rates the physical, emotional, and intellectual effects of roles pets are expected to play, and the 50 fathers and 89 mothers rated the roles expected to affect their children's lives. Six-month phone call follow-ups asc…

Reactions of Infants and Toddlers to Live and Toy Animals
250 infants, 25 boys and 25 girls each in the 6-, 12-, 18-, 24-, and 30-mo. age groups, were individually observed with a mechanical toy dog which barked and moved realistically, a contact-comfort mechanical cat which purred and meowed when hugged and petted, and the family dog(s) and/or cat(s), presented in random order. An investigator-generated checklist of proximity-seeking and contact-promoting behaviors was used to record subject responses …
Seeking a Theory of the Human/Companion Animal Bond
While studies of human/animal interactions have generated much creditable research, have produced a considerable body of related experimental data, and have pointed to many fruitful future lines of inquiry, their authors have been accused of having no theoretical foundations. But studies of the human/companion animal bond (H/CAB) already undertaken have been based on animal/animal, human/human, and human/object relationships as analogous theories…

The effects of experimenter's sex and subject's sex on the Attitudes Toward Women of fraternity, sorority, and mixed-dormitory residents
A female and a male experimenter each gave the Attitudes Toward Women Scale to 100 female and male undergraduates living in sorority and fraternity single-sex and mixed-sex dormitory housing facilities to test the hypothesis that experimenter's sex, subject's sex, and type of housing would significantly affect the AWS scores. An analysis of variance revealed that subject's sex significantly affected the scores but that experimenter's sex did not;…

Personality Characteristics and Preferences in Pet Ownership
The possibilities for matching pets to owners' personality-types for physical and psycho-social benefits were explored. The results supported the hypothesis. Job-satisfied women were achievement-oriented, cooperative, t…
