The missing link between sex and kinship
What processes are set in motion when someone discovers they are pregnant unintentionally, and what is the role of culture in these processes? This question is explored through narratives of women in the Philippines and Kenya on their first pregnancy carried to term. We show how an unintended pregnancy provides a window onto making kin and delineating the implied responsibilities towards the future child and its mother. As participants accounts d…
Mathematical Symmetries of the Binakul Textiles
Mathematical symmetries of the binakul textiles
This paper presents a method to analyze the layer symmetry structure of a textile, representing it as a two-way twofold fabric and applying notions of color symmetry to its corresponding design. In particular, it presents an analysis of the symmetry structures of the binakul textiles or binakul of the Itneg, an ethnic group located in the northern part of the Philippines. The layer symmetry groups of the binakul are determined. Results reveal tha…

Ritual act, technology, and the efficacy of traditional tattooing among the Igorots of north Luzon, Philippines
What are the social dimensions involved in the technology of traditional tattooing among the Igorots of north Luzon, the Philippines? Based on a long-term anthropological fieldwork among the Igorots, an examination of the varying traditional tattooing practices of these ethnic groups demonstrates that the significance of batok (traditional tattoos) does not only lie in their symbolic and aesthetic qualities, but also in the rituals performed, the…
Re-examining Igorot representation
The Igorots, the indigenous communities in North Luzon, Philippines, continue to be hounded to this day, due to the countless photographs and documents whose ultimate purpose was to project the Igorots as the Other. Igorot representation, issues of commodification and cultural appropriation have been, in recent years, one of the most widely discussed sources of ethical problems. The prevalence of these issues indicates the continuing challenge in…
Human mummification practices among the Ibaloy of Kabayan, North Luzon, the Philippines
The province of Benguet, situated in North Luzon, the Philippines, holds a large number of ancient mummified remains, mostly located within the municipality of Kabayan. Such bodies are mainly associated to the Ibaloy - one of the indigenous groups collectively known as Igorot - and are stored in natural rockshelters or caves carved into the stone, inside wooden coffins often obtained from hollowed pine tree segments. Recent inspections of some of…
Afterlives of Dean C. Worcester's Colonial Photographs
Dean C. Worcester, an American colonial official, journeyed through northern Luzon in the early 1900s, recording the people's appearance, customs and material culture. His photographs had a profound impact on scientific activities in the Philippines, fostering an implicit theme of the unreadiness of the Filipinos for independence. While the photographs also reflect the paradigm of social evolutionism, I argue that they provide substantial visual …
Batok (Traditional Tattoos) in Diaspora
Tattooing, in terms of both practice and tattoo design, has become a significant component of popular global culture and the focus of anthropological studies worldwide (for example, Gell, 1993; Allen, 2005; Kuwahara, 2005; Thomas et al, 2005). Tattoos also played a role in twentieth century identity politics (De Mello, 2000; Atkinson, 2003) and they take on a similar role within the Filipino diaspora. This paper examines how diasporic Filipinos a…
