    Open Access•Gabriela Prego-Vázquez, Luz Zas Varela•ARTICLE•Language Policy•2025•References: 5

This contribution examines how sociolinguistic and political forms of collective agency have emerged, oriented towards the linguistic planning of a minority language (Galician) in a participatory research project developed in a Secondary School in Galicia. The Critical Linguistic Awareness approach (García, 2016) vertebrates the ethnographic process in which students became co-researchers to analyze the linguistic landscape of their community (Ce…

  • Talking about sociolinguistic injustice

Gabriela Prego-Vázquez, Cristina Molina et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2025•References: 33

This paper explores how researchers and co-participants in a joint Participatory Action Research (PAR) project in Galicia and Madrid discursively negotiate the conditions of possibility to co-construct spaces in which to talk about forms of sociolinguistic injustice. The aim of our multisite project is to create spaces for sociolinguistic research and intervention in which to identify the "sociodiscursive" elements used to manage the conditions o…

  • Political cross-discourse

    Open Access•Celso Álvarez-Cáccamo, Gabriela Prego-Vázquez•ARTICLE•Pragmatics Quarterly Publication…•2022

Through the analysis of political rallies and parliamentary speech in Galiza, it is shown how conversationalized forms of political discourse enter into ideological manipulation and hegemony-building by professional politicians. The overall resulting phenomenon, cross-discourse , draws from habitual, daily and traditional forms of speech. Political cross-discourse consists of the tactical texturing of traditional political oratory templates throu…

  • Participation frameworks and socio-discursive competence in young children

    Open Access•María Ángeles Cobelas Cartagena, Gabriela Prego-Vázquez•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies•2019•References: 37

This article explores the socio-discursive competence of young children in Galician pre-schools. In particular, it deals with the way in which children - aged from 2;10 to 4;05 years - combine embodied actions and verbal resources to co-narrate stories with peers and adults. Using an audiovisual corpus of naturally occurring interactions, we have conducted a qualitative and multimodal analysis, observing how children react to diverse footings and…

  • Translingual Practices and Reconstruction of Identities in Maghrebi Students in Galicia

    Open Access•Adil Moustaoui, Gabriela Prego-Vázquez et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 21

In this article, we explore the emergence of a new translingual repertoire among young adolescents of Moroccan and Algerian origin in Galicia and the role it plays in reconstructing the transnational identity of young people within the Maghrebi diaspora. The data include a multimodal corpus with spoken and written interactions, collected as part of a classroom action research project, in which each student reconstructed their family and school la…

  • Unvoicing practices in classroom interaction in Galicia (Spain)

Gabriela Prego-Vázquez, Gabriela Prego Vázquez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 11

This article explores how the concept that we have chosen to callunvoicing practices, namely veiled discursive micro processes of social exclusion and silencing that social actors manage in byplay; in other words, subordinated forms of communication among a subset of unaddressed members of ratified listeners. These practices constitute efficient resources aimed at the (de)legitimization of linguisticmudeprocesses within new "spaces of multilingua…

  • Identidades en las regueifas gallegas

    Gabriela Prego-Vázquez, Gabriela Prego Vázquez•ARTICLE•Spanish in Context•2012

This paper analyses the role of code-switching in professional discourse in a corpus of 80 recorded interviews between employees of a Galician partly state-owned water utility company and customers from a multi-method approach. Drawing on the Ethnography of Communication, Conversation Analysis, Interactional Sociolinguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis and Critical Sociolinguistics or Critical Ethnography, instances of code-switching are subject…

  • The recycling of local discourses in the institutional talk

    Gabriela Prego-Vázquez, Gabriela Prego Vázquez•ARTICLE•Sociolinguistic Studies•2007•References: 11

In this article we will analyze how institutional and public discourse may be naturalized (Thompson, 1990) through the recycling of elements from daily local discourse. The process of discourse naturalization is one of transformation, making what is local, universal, what is partisan, neutral, and what is arbitrary, natural. Specifically, we will examine, as strategies for the naturalization of institutional discourse: the mobilization of traditi…

  • Frame conflict and social inequality in the workplace

    Open Access•Gabriela Prego-Vázquez•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2007•Cited by: 7•References: 18

This article focuses on frame conflicts in workplace interactions and their role in the sociodiscursive reproduction of social inequality. Specifically, I analyse the frame conflicts that arise when customers mobilize local discursive patterns, code-switching and conversational topics. I observe how these local communicative means, which are considered to be of lesser value on the linguistic market, struggle when matched against the institutional…

  • Interviews between employees and customers during a company restructuring process

    Open Access•Esperanza Morales-López, Gabriela Prego-Vázquez et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2005•Cited by: 5•References: 13

This article is the result of discursive research carried out at a company involved in a restructuring programme, aimed at implementing a series of changes following the awarding of a new contract to manage a city’s water supply and sewerage system. This change in management from a public (City Hall) to a semi-private enterprise resulted in a great deal of confusion among certain sectors of the population. As a result, employees found themselves …

    Gabriela Prego-Vázquez•ARTICLE•Sociolinguistic Studies•2002•References: 24

In this paper I will analyse how traditional Galician naming patterns circulate from discourses produced in traditional networks to the institutional and political speech belonging to the networks that emerge in the process of urbanisation and establishment of a democratic political system in Galicia. Based on the Ethnography of Communication, Interactional Sociolinguistics, Conversational Analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis, I will examine …
