Open Access•Kristine M Molina, Kevin Tan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant and Minority…•2025

This study provides critical insights into the pervasive structural violence and compounded stress experienced by Hispanic/Latino caregivers, a population disproportionately impacted by systemic inequities that can adversely affect overall well-being. We analyzed data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Youth (n = 458) to identify structural violence exposure patterns among Hispanic/Latino caregivers/parents and examine how …

  • Adding Insult to Injury: Everyday Discrimination Moderates Stressor-Related Negative Affect

Amandeep Kaur, Susan T Charles et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•2022

Studies examining the effects of discrimination on emotional well-being have often overlooked (a) differential effects of both everyday and lifetime discrimination and (b) how both types of discrimination may exacerbate stressor-related affect-even when daily stressors are unrelated to discrimination. The current study examined the effects of daily stressors not attributed to discrimination (i.e., nondiscrimination-related daily stressors) on dai…

This is the first study to explore the relationship between wealth and health among Hispanic/Latinos of diverse backgrounds, finding only partial evidence of this association. A…

  • Everyday Discrimination, Family Context, and Psychological Distress Among Latino Adults in the United States

    Open Access•Kristine M Molina, Tariana V Little et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2016•Cited by: 11•References: 35

Research suggests that experiences of discrimination can threaten the viabilities of families, which may subsequently affect an individual's mental health. Our study tests the hypotheses that (a) everyday discrimination will be indirectly associated with psychological distress through family cultural conflict and lower family cohesion among Latinos and (b) gender will moderate these relations. The sample included Latinos ( N = 2,554) from the Nat…

    Open Access•Kristine M Molina, Drexler James•ARTICLE•Group Processes & Intergroup…•2016•Cited by: 37•References: 28

Emerging research suggests that both perceptions of discrimination and internalized racism (i.e., endorsement of negative stereotypes of one's racial group) are associated with poor mental health. Yet, no studies to date have examined their effects on mental health with racial/ethnic minorities in the US in a single study. The present study examined: (a) the direct effects of everyday discrimination and internalized racism on risk of DSM-IV crite…

Objectives. We examined whether transnational ties, social ties, and neighborhood ties were independently associated with current smoking status among Latino immigrants. We also tested interactions to determine whether these associations were moderated by gender. Methods. We conducted a series of weighted logistic regression analyses (i.e., economic remittances, number of return visits, friend support, family support, and neighborhood cohesion) u…
