  • The Cambridge Handbook of Ethnic and Racial Discrimination and Youth Development

Open Access•Margaret Beale Spencer, Yilin Liu et al.•BOOK•The Cambridge Handbook of Ethnic…•2026

How is ethnic and racial discrimination impacting our young people? Scholars around the world have found that discriminatory interactions of this nature have detrimental impacts on youth and their development. In this handbook, the world's leading experts on this topic examine the current state of the science, presenting current research and tracing foundational theories, empirical findings, multilevel methods, and intervention strategies for chi…

  • Threatening sociopolitical contexts negatively affect belonging and motivation among minoritized students

    R Josiah Rosario, Mesmin Destin•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2024

A series of global events and parallel advances in theorizing about human development have revealed a need to broaden what are considered "relevant" features of young people's social and educational contexts. These realities reveal the need to investigate how broader sociopolitical contexts affect identity-related processes and educational experiences of marginalized youth. Four studies evaluate whether racially minoritized students' sense of bel…

  • Where’s My People?”

Open Access•R Josiah Rosario, Ursula Moffitt et al.•ARTICLE•Emerging Adulthood•2023

As attending college became a normative life experience in the U.S., society developed a cultural narrative about what a “good” college experience looks like. But, for racially minoritized college students, this master narrative often excludes their experiences. Integrating narrative and ethnic-racial identity, the current study investigates how a sample of 11 Black and Latinx students ( M age = 19.73) narrate their lives in college and make mean…

Open Access•Mesmin Destin, R Josiah Rosario et al.•ARTICLE•Policy Insights from the…•2021

As colleges and universities expand the socioeconomic diversity of their student populations, many policies and practices require reconceptualization to better serve all students. Recent social psychology and learning sciences research directly informs how to support the achievement and well-being of students from lower socioeconomic status backgrounds, with attention to intersecting minoritized identities. These approaches challenge assimilation…

  • Oh, You’re Pretty for a Dark-Skinned Girl”

Open Access•R Josiah Rosario, Imani Minor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•2021•Cited by: 16•References: 20

The current analysis explored the relevance of colorism among Black girls enrolled at a predominately Black, all-girls high school, with a specific focus on their identities and well-being. Fifty-nine Black girls ( M age = 16.97) completed a survey and semi-structured interview. Results from a two-step quant-qual analysis indicate a strong positive association between rejecting colorist ideology and positive self-esteem. Open coding of semi-struc…

  • [I]t’s hard because it’s the cops that are killing us for stupid stuff

    Open Access•Leoandra Onnie Rogers, R Josiah Rosario et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2020•Cited by: 23•References: 16

Black Lives Matter (BLM) has profoundly shifted public and political discourse about race in the United States and thus the broader sociopolitical landscape in which children learn about race and their own racial identities. A sample of Black, White, and Multiracial children (N = 100; Mage = 10.18 years old) were interviewed about their racial identities in 2014 and again in 2016. During these 2 years, BLM surged with the National March on Washin…

  • O coming out de gays e lésbicas e as relações familiares

    Open Access•Pedro Frazão, R Josiah Rosario et al.•ARTICLE•Análise Psicológica•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 6
