Boundary management preferences from a gender and cross-cultural perspective
Managing work and nonwork responsibilities when labour protection is weak: The role of family supportive supervisor behaviours
Knowledge concerning the reconciliation of work and life in developing countries with weak labour protection and little governmental support (e.g. statutory work–life support) is still very limited. In this mixed‐method study, we explore how employees manage their work and nonwork responsibilities in Lebanon—a developing country with poor national and organisational work–life support. Findings from a qualitative study of 10 blue‐ (BC),10 white‐co…

Part-time work and gender inequality in Europe: A comparative analysis of satisfaction with work–life balance
Part-time work is an increasingly common strategy for handling work and family – but is it an effective strategy everywhere and for everyone? To answer this question, we examine satisfaction with work–life balance (SWLB) of workers in 22 European countries. Our results show that part-time workers have higher SWLB than full-time workers; the more so, the fewer hours they put in. Yet, we find an important gender difference: women in marginal part-t…
Measurement Invariance of the Satisfaction With Life Scale Across 26 Countries
The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is a commonly used life satisfaction scale. Cross-cultural researchers use SWLS to compare mean scores of life satisfaction across countries. Despite the wide use of SWLS in cross-cultural studies, measurement invariance of SWLS has rarely been investigated, and previous studies showed inconsistent findings. Therefore, we examined the measurement invariance of SWLS with samples collected from 26 countries. …
Work-family conflict and organisational citizenship behaviour: Empirical evidence from Spanish employees
Based on conservation of resources theory, this study examines the influence of work-to-family conflict (WFC) and family-to-work conflict (FWC) on three dimensions of organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) among Spanish employees in various industries. Using structural equation modelling, significant negative relationships were found between FWC and OCB directed towards the individual and task citizenship behaviour. No significant relationshi…
