  • A Competition Perspective on Physician Non-compete Agreements

    Open Access•Daniel J Gilman•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2024

Physician non-compete agreements may have significant competitive implications, and effects on both providers and patients, but they are treated variously under the law on a state-by-state basis. Reviewing the relevant law and the economic literature cannot identify with confidence the net effects of such agreements on either physicians or health care delivery with any generality. In addition to identifying future research projects to inform poli…

  • The Martyr Pop Moment

    Daniel J Gilman•ARTICLE•Ethnos•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 8

The military regime that seized power in Egypt in July 2013 has suggested that the security personnel, rather than the unarmed protestors who died in the 25 January 2011 uprising, were the martyrs that the nation should celebrate. This rhetorical claim in support of authoritarian suppression of dissent must be understood in the context of the popular culture of the immediate post-Mubarak period, particularly the 'martyr pop' music video clips. Th…

  • Cairo Pop

    Daniel J Gilman•BOOK•Cairo Pop•2014

This book represents the first scholarly engagement with shababiyya, the genre of popular music that dominates consumption in the Arab world in general and Egypt in particular. This genre is hugely popular among the contemporary youth generation of Egypt, yet scorned and ignored by their elders and scholars alike. The book analyzes the changing trends in musical tastes in Egypt over the last fifty years, and reveals a shift in the underlying aest…

  • What's a Theory to do… with Seeing? or Some Empirical Considerations for Observation and Theory

Daniel J Gilman, Daniel Gilman•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•1992

Criticism of the observation/theory distinction generally supposes it to be an empirical fact that even the most basic human perception is heavily theory–laden. I offer critical examination of experimental evidence cited by Thomas Kuhn and Paul Churchland on behalf of this supposition. I argue that the empirical evidence cited is inadequate support for the claims in question. I further argue that we have empirical grounds for claiming that the Ku…

  • The Neurobiology of Observation

    Open Access•Daniel J Gilman, Daniel Gilman•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1991•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Paul Churchland has recently argued that empirical evidence strongly suggests that perception is penetrable to the beliefs or theories held by individual perceivers (1988). While there has been much discussion of the sorts of psychological cases he presents, little has been said about his arguments from neurology. I offer a critical examination of his claim that certain efferents in the brain are evidence against perceptual encapsulation. I argue…
