  • The Predestination of Capital: Projecting E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company into the New World

    Martin Giraudeau•ARTICLE•Critical Historical Studies•2019•References: 15

The article studies the role of entrepreneurial techniques in the capitalization of early industrial ventures. It focuses on the preparation and circulation of project proposals by the Du Pont de Nemours family, ahead of their transplantation to the United States: father Pierre Samuel’s 1797 plan for an agricultural colony and his son Irénée’s 1800 project for a gunpowder manufactory. The two men and the types of projects they proposed did not en…

  • Proving Future Profit: Business Plans as Demonstration Devices

    Martin Giraudeau•ARTICLE•Osiris•2018•References: 30

This essay is a study of the “Project for the establishment of a war and hunting gunpowder manufactory in the United States,” written by Irénée Du Pont de Nemours in 1800, in order to raise funds from potential investors for what was to become the DuPont Corporation. It shows that the “Project” is best understood as a demonstration device akin to those used by natural philosophers at the time. This investment proposal relied on demonstration tech…

  • The Limits of Performativity

Franck Cochoy, Martin Giraudeau et al.•BOOK•Limits of Performativity•2015

The economy is commonly described either as the apolitical realm of calculation or as the fully political one of domination. This book scrutinizes the ways in which the economy is performed, in order to situate where precisely politics is located with regard to economic matters. Politics, the book demonstrates, thus appears at the turning point, in the place where the efficiency of economics is negotiated and where the need to forward it, reshape…

  • Remembering the Future: Entrepreneurship Guidebooks in the US, from Meditation to Method (1945-1975)

    Open Access•Martin Giraudeau•ARTICLE•Foucault Studies•2012•Cited by: 3

This paper discusses Foucault’s analyses of the rise of the entrepreneur in the second half of the 20th century. Whereas Foucault based his conclusions on readings of economic theory, we propose here to look at “practical texts,” i.e. entrepreneurship guidebooks, in the way Foucault himself did in his research on antiquity. We also mobilize Foucauldian concepts from his lectures on the “Care of the Self” and the “Hermeneutics of the Subject” to a…

  • Performing Physiocracy: Pierre Samuel Du Pont De Nemours and the Limits of Political Engineering

    Martin Giraudeau•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economy•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 12

The story of Pierre Samuel Du Pont de Nemours has often been described as one of success. The man was a well-known statesman, economist and entrepreneur in late eighteenth-century France and his main legacy, the famous and still thriving Du Pont company, suggests a brilliant trajectory. The aim of this paper, however, is to analyze Du Pont's failure in performing the political and economic doctrine of which he was an active promoter all through h…

    Open Access•Martin Giraudeau•ARTICLE•Sociologie du Travail•2007•Cited by: 10•References: 15
