Retirement in Residential Parks in Australia: A Smart Move or Move Smart
Residential parks and manufactured homes are a small but significant housing market for seniors and retirees in Australia. Residents own their home and rent the ground upon which the home sits from the park operator who owns the land and the infrastructure. However, residents’ long-term housing security could be compromised because there is no guarantee of on-going tenure. The research discusses issues affecting park residents and canvasses ideas…
Long-term Associations Between Physical Frailty and Performance in Specific Cognitive Domains
The findings suggest that frailty-related cognitive deficits may exist independently of mechanisms underpinning neurodegenerative disorders such as MCI and dementia. If confirmed, this finding suggests a new avenue for preventative and therapeutic interventions in clinical and public health contexts for older adults
Intraindividual Reaction Time Variability, Falls, and Gait in Old Age: A Systematic Review
Aerobic Fitness and Intraindividual Reaction Time Variability in Middle and Old Age
The findings suggest that aerobic fitness moderated the association between age and intraindividual RT variability, and that executive function selectively mediated that association. It is possible that aerobic fitness helps attenuate the neurobiological decline that contributes to cognitive deficits in old age and that WP variability is a measure that may be particularly sensitive to this effect
Preserved Differentiation Between Physical Activity and Cognitive Performance Across Young, Middle, and Older Adulthood Over 8 Years
Results support preserved differentiation, where physically active adults have higher initial cognitive ability, and the advantage is maintained over time. PA appears to be unique in showing differences across young, middle, and older adulthood in predicting cognition
Intraindividual variability is a fundamental phenomenon of aging: Evidence from an 8-year longitudinal study across young, middle, and older adulthood
Moment-to-moment intraindividual variability (IIV) in cognitive speed is a sensitive behavioral indicator of the integrity of the aging brain and brain damage, but little information is known about how IIV changes from being relatively low in young adulthood to substantially higher in older adulthood. We evaluated possible age group, sex, and task differences in IIV across adulthood using a large, neurologically normal, population-based sample ev…
Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (Meim) Expansion: Measuring Racial, Religious, and National Aspects of Sense of Ethnic Identity Within the United Kingdom
These studies examined the degree to which racial, religious, and national aspects of individuals' sense of ethnic identity stand as interrelated, yet distinct, constructs. Results of exploratory factor analyses in Study 1 (n = 272) revealed that a three-factor model specifying racial, religious, and national identities yielded optimal fit to correlational data from an expanded, 36-item version of the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM; Rob…
Evaluating the Psychometric Properties of the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (Meim) within the United Kingdom
In the present study, we examined the psychometric properties of the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) (Phinney, 1992 Phinney, J. S. 1992. The Multi-group Ethnic Identity Measure: A new scale for use with adolescents and you adults from diverse groups. Journal of Adolescent Research, 7: 156–176. Mental Health and Cognitive Function in Adults Aged 18 to 92 Years
We investigated mental health and cognitive function in 195 community-dwelling adults aged 18 to 92 years (M = 46.64). We assessed several cognitive domains, including psychomotor, executive function, and episodic memory. We found a significant Age x Mental Health interaction in relation to within-person (WP) variability (trial-to-trial variability in reaction time performance) in a four-choice psychomotor task and a Stroop task, but not in relat…
Cholesterol and Triglycerides Moderate the Effect of Apolipoprotein E on Memory Functioning in Older Adults
We used data from the Betula Study to examine associations between total cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein E on 10-year changes in cognitive performance. Tests assessing episodic memory (recall and recognition), semantic memory (knowledge and fluency), and visuospatial ability (block design) were administered to 524 nondemented adults (initial age of 55-80 years); multilevel modeling was applied to the data. Higher triglyceride level…
Apolipoprotein E, B Vitamins, and Cognitive Function in Older Adults
Recognition of dated and contemporary famous faces, short-term memory, and visuospatial abilities were investigated in adults aged 75 years and older as a function of apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype, epsilon4 or not epsilon4, and whether participants recorded normal or low levels of B vitamins. No associations between B vitamins and APOE were identified in respect to short-term memory or visuospatial skills, or for contemporary famous faces. How…
The Role of Acceptance and Job Control in Mental Health, Job Satisfaction, and Work Performance.
Acceptance, the willingness to experience thoughts, feelings, and physiological sensations without having to control them or let them determine one's actions, is a major individual determinant of mental health and behavioral effectiveness in a more recent theory of psychopathology. This 2-wave panel study examined the ability of acceptance also to explain mental health, job satisfaction, and performance in the work domain. The authors hypothesize…
Stress Management and Innovation Interventions at Work
A study among health-care workers is reported where a traditional stress management program (n = 66) was compared with an intervention promoting innovation at work as a form of stress management (n = 52), and a control group (n = 84). Measures relating to both the process of participation in the respective interventions, and outcome in terms of psychological well-being were taken. The traditional program, emphasizing cognitive-behavioral and arou…
