Heretical Statements: An Autoethnohraphic Story Regarding One Doctoral Dissertation on the Anthropology of Opera
In this paper the author presents in self-reflexive manner a confession, which has not yet been told or completely written but is true, and it’s about some specific academic, research, epistemological and social circumstances in which the first doctoral dissertation on anthropology of opera was produced and perceived in Slovenia. In order to obtain pertinent information about this "exotic work", the author will present its motives for anthropolog…
Opera as Social Manifest: Madlena Zepter’s Private Opera House and Theatre as Corporate Gift to the Serbian Nation; Pp. 229–271
This article investigates the social and cultural facets of a very unusual operatic project from Belgrade, Serbia, related to the constitution of the Opera and Theatre Madlenianum, a private opera house officially founded in 1997 and opened in 2005 by Madlena Zepter as its single patron and donor. Here we discuss the reasons why a rich individual would build, hold and run her own opera house and theatre in these times when the tradition of such a…
Opera as Social Showcase: Rituals of “Magic Mirrors” at the Margravial Opera House in Mid-Eighteenth-Century Bayreuth
This article proposes a ritualistic approach to opera in the historical case of the mid-eighteenth-century Margravial Opera House in Bavarian Bayreuth to argue that court opera can be understood as a variety of social showcase. In this view, court opera is a specific form of communication through which opera established the various types of relationship between itself and the social worlds in which, and for which, it was created. By referring to …
Fashion, Media and the Elite: Ethnography of the Exploitation of the Slovenian Transitional Media Promenade
The article is an attempt to represent a particular social practice, which has, due to its currency and ubiquity in the media as of late, gained a surprisingly naturalized legitimacy within the Slovenian mediascape. After Slovenia gained its independence in 1991, two parallel processes could be observed. On the one hand, the state itself was searching for a new identity which it could project both inward and outward, it was looking for a way to c…
Skladatelji in občinstva med visoko in popularno kulturo: K teoriji in zgodovini družbene recepcije opere

Pri tem so izpostavljeni štirje modeli družbene recepcije opere: 1) Mozart, hibridizem in divergentna kultura; 2) Wagner, avantgardizem in visoka kultura; 3) Meyeerber, komercializem in popularna kultura; 4) Verdi, belkantizem in ljudska kultura
Lévi-Strauss et l'Opéra
This paper is dedicated to Claude Lévi-Strauss and his structural reading of opera as metaphorical 'composing' of an anthropological grand opera, materialized in the four-volume study of Mythologiques, which refers to Wagner's tetralogy of The Ring. He created a type of comparative view of the function and structure of myth schemes in Amerindian culture and the orchestral scores of Wagner's operas, and implicitly signalled that European music, wi…
Opera and the Anthropologist: An Odd Couple
The discussion starts with a mere statement of fact which also denotes the relationship between opera and anthropology: on one hand opera is a quite new and “exotic” topic for anthropologists, on the other anthropology is still perceived as a very strange and unusual approach to opera. The author establishes many reasons and endeavors which suggest that opera and anthropology no longer need to be alien to each other. If social or cultural anthrop…
Skiing Nation: Towards an Anthropology of Slovenia's National Sport
This paper explores the role of alpine skiing in Slovenian culture and society by focusing on the construction and maintenance of a sporting national story. The research, which is based on discourse analysis and the ethnographic method, suggests that in Slovenia, alpine skiing, with its natural sceneries, amateurish background, sporting events, media attention and national heroes, is one of the main sports arenas in which the Slovenian nation‐ima…
Sport, Landscape, and the National Identity: Representations of an Idealized Vision of Nationhood in Slovenian Skiing Telecasts
The paper explores the role of the televised landscape in presenting alpine skiing as a Slovenian national pastime as well as being distinctive TV sport. Alpine skiing is one of those sports where the Slovenian nation-imagining has been exercised extensively throughout the last decades. In Slovenia, alpine skiing with its related natural scenery, sporting events and national heroes, is one of the main sports arenas in which the recent Slovenian e…
Opera, Myth, Society: How Do They Correlate
The paper examines some mythical aspects of social representations of opera, and is supported by examples from the Slovenian operatic environment. The argumentation rests on three key premises: firstly, considering the mass of words and images which surround the opera phenomenon in public spheres, it is strange that there is a relatively small number of interpretations of the opera which would surpass the canonised notions, such as opera as a wor…
