Insight is sought into the usefulness and comparability of an intelligence test for schoolchildren living in India and in the Netherlands. A Dutch test, the Revisie Amsterdamse Kinder Intelligentie Test (RAKIT), was adapted to the Indian situation (Indian Child Intelligence Test [ICIT]). Using the ICIT and the RAKIT, 612 Indian children and 1,007 Dutch children were tested, respectively. The average test scores for the ICIT group were lower in a …
Cross-Cultural Comparison of Sex-Related Differences on Intelligence Tests: A Meta-Analysis
Cross-cultural generalizability of the relation between sex and intelligence is examined by means of a meta-analysis of 189 studies. For this purpose, the statistical significance and the size of sex-related differences in cognitive factors corresponding to Thurstone's intelligence model are studied. Furthermore, the variance in significance and in size of the sex-intelligence relationship is investigated for five large clusters of cultures. Alth…
Effects of iodine deficiency on mental and psychomotor abilities
Severe iodine deficiency may lead to endemic cretinism, which is characterized by a number of abnormalities, such as mental retardation, neurological abnormalities and hearing disorders. These abnormalities may occur in various combinations, but impaired mental development is always a component. The present study was attempted to determine whether there is also evidence of mental retardation, perhaps to a lesser degree, in that part of the popula…
