  • Bartered Brides: Politics, Gender and Marriage in an Afghan Tribal Society

    Open Access•Nancy Tapper•BOOK•Bartered Brides•1991

Bartered Brides is a detailed study of marriage among the Maduzai, a tribal society in Afghan Turkistan. It is the first study of the area which looks in depth at both the domestic aspects of marriage and its relation to the productive and reproductive activities of women, as well as marriage as a means of managing political and economic conflict and competition. The fieldwork was carried out in the early 1970s before the 1978 coup and Soviet inv…

    Open Access•Richard Tapper, Nancy Tapper•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•1986•Cited by: 17•References: 12

Food, eating, and commensality among the Durrani Pashtuns are discussed in terms of four domains of discourse: the Koranic, the Tribal, the Humoral, and the Magical. Each domain is related to a distinct section of the Afghan-Islamic Great Tradition. The domains offer alternative frames of reference between which actors switch according to context, in order to preserve recognition of the ultimate priority of Islam and to conceal relations of power…

Economic analysis is used to examine the institution of bride-price. Supply and demand curves are developed in the context of the marriage market, and some hypotheses about the determinants of bride-price are derived. Using data collected by Granqvist in the Palestinian village of Artas, these hypotheses are tested by means of multiple regression analysis. The main explanatory variables are the productivity of the bride (measured by variables suc…

This paper examines some variables which may explain differences in the position of women, particularly in Middle Eastern tribal societies. By position of women, I mean women's status and roles vis-à-vis men. I am primarily concerned with differences in the dominant or male models concerning women, and the behaviours associated with them, however at a number of points in the paper, for illumination, I refer to women's models of women-that is, mut…

The aim of this article is to give an account of the considerations which led Amīr 'Abd al-Rahmān Khān (1880-1901) to encourage Pashtūn migration to northern Afghanistan, the difficulties met in the execution of this policy, and the reasons for its final success. It is hoped that this case study will throw light on some of the domestic problems which faced the Iron Amīr and demonstrate a new aspect of his role in the 'Great Game' between Russia a…
