Religiosity and treatment response to antidepressant medication
The present study examined the relationship between religiosity/spirituality and treatment response to antidepressant medication (citalopram). One-hundred and forty-eight Caucasian and African-American adults with uncomplicated major depression were treated with citalopram (20-60mg/day) over an 8-week period in a prospective multi-site clinical trial. Treatment response was assessed weekly with the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. Religiosit…

Psychopharmacology, Ethnicity and Culture
Psychological and physiological assessments on American hostages freed from captivity in Iran
Medical evaluations of 52 Americans held hostage in Iran for 444 days included psychological testing and physiological measurements. Psychological testing utilized the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16-PF) and focused on the stress management capabilities of the group upon their arrival at Wiesbaden, West Germany. Physiological testing utilized plasma and urinary cortisol along with…

Secretion of Hormones Influencing Water and Electrolyte Balance (Antidiuretic Hormone, Aldosterone, Prolactin) during Sleep in Normal Adult Men
Renal conservation of electrolytes and water occurs normally during sleep. Antidiuretic hormone (ADH), aldosterone (ALDO), and prolactin (PRL) are hormones that may have interactive effects on kidney function. The availability of a radioimmunoassay for ADH as well as for ALDO and PRL permitted the study of the simultaneous secretion patterns of these three hormones during all-night sleep in eight normal young adult men, by blood sampling every 20…
The Stress of Aircraft Carrier Landings
As a possible reflection of central norepinephrine metabolism, urine MHPG excretion was measured in naval aviators during aircraft carrier landing practice, a complex task and a stress of considerable magnitude. Mean urine MHPG was significantly increased after both day and night carrier landings compared to a nonflying control day. These findings suggest that there may be an accelerated metabolism of brain norepinephrine under conditions of heig…
