‘If they can lead, I can too’
Our research examines which factors enable women to relate to and aspire for stereotype-inconsistent roles, like leadership. Across two studies, we tested the effects of supervisor gender and supervisor characteristics on women's social comparisons and their leadership aspiration. Our first survey study ( N = 303) found that women had higher social comparisons with communal supervisors irrespective of supervisor gender. Our second experiment ( N …
Speaking Up and Standing Out
A widely held assumption is that women self‐advocate less than men. Our study challenges this view. Drawing on interviews with 71 men and women in a multinational company's leadership development pipeline and 10 HRM managers, we examine how women navigate self‐advocacy within gendered organizational logics. We theorize self‐advocacy as a site of additive labor necessitated by the friction between masculine‐coded ideal professional logics and idea…
The effects of the charisma signal and voice pitch in female leader selection
Women are often discriminated against in leader selection contexts. This study examines the charisma signal, voice pitch, and their interaction in female leader selection (i.e., perceptions of [non-incentivized and incentivized] hirability, competence, and warmth). We derive our hypotheses from signaling theory and the evolutionary perspective on charisma. Based on three pre-registered experiments (total N = 2,408), we found that the charisma sig…

Beyond traditional interviews
With the advent of new technology, traditional job interviews have been supplemented by asynchronous video interviews (AVIs). However, research on psychometric properties of AVIs is limited. In this study, 710 participants completed a mock AVI responding to eight personality questions (Extraversion, Conscientiousness). We collected self- and observer reports of personality, interview performance ratings, attractiveness, and AVI meta-information (…
Banding together to avoid exploitation
Although dominance is a common strategy for attaining high social rank, it often entails exploitative behavior, bringing leaders into conflict with followers. Anthropological work suggests that a long evolutionary history of such conflict has set the stage for moral systems designed to reduce exploitation from powerful people. Here we establish links between dominance (and prestige) and moral leadership, reporting three studies (total N = 1246) d…
The kernel of truth in text-based personality assessment
The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) is a popular closed-vocabulary text analysis software program that is used to understand whether individuals’ use of linguistic categories (i.e., word categories, such as negative affect) depends on their personality traits. Here, we present the first meta-analysis of the relations between the Big Five personality traits and 52 linguistic categories of the English language. Across 31 eligible samples (…
Age and Workplace Deviance
In the current meta-analysis, we examine the relation between age and workplace deviance, and find a small but significant negative correlation (ρ ̄ = −.124, k = 198). More importantly, we test several trait-based mechanisms to help explain this relation. Specifically, based on the neo-socioanalytical model of personality change, we hypothesized that those Big Five personality traits that change with age, HEXACO honesty–humility, and trait negati…
Psychological individual differences as predictors of refugees’ local language proficiency
Learning the local language is important for the successful integration of immigrants. Previous research has identified a number of sociodemographic factors that are associated with the effectiveness of local language acquisition among immigrants, but little is known about the influence of psychological differences on immigrants’ local language acquisition. In the present research, individual differences in general mental ability ( GMA ), work se…
