  • Oasis Senior Supportive Living

Open Access•Reshma Parvin Nuri, China Hand et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Introduction: According to the World Health Organization, in 2019, there were one billion people aged 60 years and older. This number is projected to rise to 2.1 billion by 2050. However, older adults living in the community often experience loneliness and other health consequences. Our existing service model, which is heavily focused on disease and lacks the involvement of service users, is not adequately prepared to address the diverse social a…

  • Community Support Providers in the Social Networks of Older Adults Living in Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (Norcs)

Open Access•Reshma Parvin Nuri, China Hand et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Introduction: The world population is aging, and most people prefer to stay in their homes for as long as possible. There is a growing number of naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCs)—unplanned neighborhoods or apartment buildings with a high proportion of older adults—in many countries such as Australia, Canada, and the USA. To experience healthy aging, older adults living in NORCs must be surrounded by a quality network encompassing…

  • The overview of reviews

    Harris Cooper, Alison C Koenka•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2012

In the past two decades, a new form of scholarship has appeared in which researchers present an overview of previously conducted research syntheses on the same topic. In these efforts, research syntheses are the principal units of evidence. Overviews of reviews introduce unique problems that require unique solutions. This article describes what methods overviewers have developed or have adopted from other forms of scholarship. These methods conce…

  • The effectiveness and relative importance of choice in the classroom.

Erika A Patall, Harris Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Psychology•2010

This investigation examined the effects of providing choices among homework assignments on motiva-tion and subsequent academic performance. Students were randomly assigned within classrooms either to receive a choice of homework options or to be assigned an option for all homework in one instructional unit. Conditions were reversed for a second instructional unit. Results revealed that when students received a choice of homework they reported hig…

  • Aerobic Exercise and Neurocognitive Performance

    Patrick J Smith, James A Blumenthal et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2010

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of aerobic exercise training on neurocognitive performance. Although the effects of exercise on neurocognition have been the subject of several previous reviews and meta-analyses, they have been hampered by methodological shortcomings and are now outdated as a result of the recent publication of several large-scale, randomized, controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review of RCTs…

  • Parent Involvement in Homework

Open Access•Erika A Patall, Harris Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Educational Research•2008

New emphasis is being placed on the importance of parent involvement in children’s education. In a synthesis of research on the effects of parent involvement in homework, a meta-analysis of 14 studies that manipulated parent training for homework involvement reveals that training parents to be involved in their child’s homework results in (a) higher rates of homework completion, (b) fewer homework problems, and (c) possibly, improved academic per…

  • Does Homework Improve Academic Achievement? A Synthesis of Research, 1987–2003

Open Access•Harris Cooper, Jorgianne Civey Robinson et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Educational Research•2006

In this article, research conducted in the United States since 1987 on the effects of homework is summarized. Studies are grouped into four research designs. The authors found that all studies, regardless of type, had design flaws. However, both within and across design types, there was generally consistent evidence for a positive influence of homework on achievement. Studies that reported simple homework–achievement correlations revealed evidenc…

  • The Relation Between Self-Beliefs and Academic Achievement

    Jeffrey C Valentine, David L Dubois et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Psychologist•2004

There has been extensive debate among scholars and practitioners concerning whether self-beliefs influence academic achievement. To address this question, findings of longitudinal studies investigating the relation between self-beliefs and achievement were synthesized using meta-analysis. Estimated effects are consistent with a small, favorable influence of positive self-beliefs on academic achievement, with an average standardized path or regres…

  • Homework Hotlines

Kelle Reach, Harris Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Into Practice•2004•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 3

It is common for students to have difficulty completing homework in a timely and accurate manner. Many school districts and organizations offer homework hotlines to help students complete assignments. However, educators lack a clear description of what is necessary to establish and maintain an effective hotline. This article addresses four issues that need to be considered: (a) a definition of homework hotlines and some of their variations; (b) h…

  • Cues to deception

    Bella M Depaulo, James J Lindsay et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2003•Citada por: 80•Referencias: 193

Do people behave differently when they are lying compared with when they are telling the truth? The combined results of 1,338 estimates of 158 cues to deception are reported. Results show that in some ways, liars are less forthcoming than truth tellers, and they tell less compelling tales. They also make a more negative impression and are more tense. Their stories include fewer ordinary imperfections and unusual contents. However, many behaviors …

  • A Brief History of Research Synthesis

    Open Access•Iain Chalmers, Larry V Hedges et al.•ARTICLE•Evaluation & the Health Professions•2002

Science is supposed to be cumulative, but scientists only rarely cumulate evidence scientifically. This means that users of research evidence have to cope with a plethora of reports of individual studies with no systematic attempt made to present new results in the context of similar studies. Although the need to synthesize research evidence has been recognized for well over two centuries, explicit methods for this form of research were not devel…

  • Effectiveness of Mentoring Programs for Youth

    Open Access•David L Dubois, Bruce E Holloway et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2002

We used meta‐analysis to review 55 evaluations of the effects of mentoring programs on youth. Overall, findings provide evidence of only a modest or small benefit of program participation for the average youth. Program effects are enhanced significantly, however, when greater numbers of both theory‐based and empirically based “best practices” are utilized and when strong relationships are formed between mentors and youth. Youth from backgrounds o…

  • A statistical review of the literature concerning the self-serving attribution bias in interpersonal influence situations

Open Access•Robert M Arkin, Robert Arkin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•1980

Based upon his review of the self-serving attribution bias literature, Zuckerman (1979) concluded that research employing an interpersonal influence setting was less likely than other research paradigms to produce significant differences in self-attribution for success and failure. A survey of the research reviewed by Zuckerman as well as a more current survey of the relevant literature were undertaken. Statistical combinations of these two sets …

The inferences made in integrative research reviews are as central to the validity of behavioral science knowledge as those made in primary research. Therefore, research reviewers must pay the same attention to rigorous methodology that is required of primary researchers. This article conceptualizes the research review as a scientific inquiry involving five stages that parallel those of primary research. The functions, sources of variance, and po…
