A Comparison of High School Graduation Predictors Between Two Ontario Student Cohorts
While a number of factors have already been shown to impact variations in graduation rates among students in Canada, there is little research examining the changing impact of these factors on Ontario students’ secondary education completion over time. This research draws on data from two Grade 9 cohorts (2006 and 2011) from the Toronto District School Board in order to unpack how predictors of high school graduation change over time. In particula…
A multi-level approach to examining food security, race, academic performance, and post-secondary confirmation in a Toronto high school cohort, 2011-2014
The following study examines how a class-based measure of food security was associated with high school grades and later post-secondary enrollments by self-identified race. We use multilevel regression to analyze data merged among the 2011 Toronto District School Board Student Census, administrative records, and college and university application information. Statistical interaction terms examine if food security is differentially associated with…
Differences in Language Proficiency and Learning Strategies Among Immigrant Women to Canada
Immigrant women to Canada face unique challenges in gaining mastery of English or French, the country’s two official languages. The study focuses on differences among women with respect to pre-migration and post-migration characteristics that position them differently with respect to language learning in the social contexts where they assert their immigrant identity. This study examines issues in language acquisition among adult immigrant women a…
The Intersectionality of Postsecondary Pathways
Using data from the Toronto District School Board, we examine the postsecondary pathways of students with special education needs (SEN). We consider both university and college pathways, employing multilevel multinomial logistic regressions, conceptualizing our findings within a life course and intersectionality framework. Our findings reveal that having SEN reduces the likelihood of confirming university, but increases the likelihood of college …
Impact of Canadian Postsecondary Education on Occupational Prestige of Highly Educated Immigrants
Understanding the Economic Integration of Immigrants
This study assesses whether characteristics relating to ethnic identity and social inclusion influence the earnings of recent immigrants in Canada. Past research has revealed that relevant predictors of immigrant earnings include structural and demographic characteristics, educational credentials and employment-related characteristics. However, due to the unavailability of situational and agency variables in existing surveys, past research has ge…

Predicting Earnings Among Immigrants To Canada
The current study examines the importance of country of origin in predicting the labour market earnings among recent immigrants to Canada. The authors argue that, in addition to individual-level characteristics associated with immigrant capital, macro-level features associated with immigrant origins must be taken into account when considering the economic performance of immigrants in their host country. Country-level factors are said to accompany…
Early School Leaving among Immigrants in Toronto Secondary Schools
While education statistics confirm that there is little difference in the dropout rates of native-born and immigrant youth, analyses of Toronto District School Board (TDSB) data have revealed significant variation in school persistence within immigrant groups. Among newcomer youth, the decision to leave school early has been reported to be strongly influenced by socioeconomic status as well as such factors as country of origin, age at arrival, ge…
The Acculturation of Canadian Immigrants

Opportunity and Uncertainty
Based on the longest-running survey of its kind in Canada, this book examines events in the lives of a generation of Ontario residents who graduated from grade 12 in 1973 and recreates the world in which these high school students faced the future
The Persistence of Social Structure
From a rational action perspective, one might predict that the occupational aspirations and expectations of Canadian youth would have declined between the 1970s and the 1990s as the youth labour market deteriorated. Whether or not such a shift in the level of occupational goals was observed, a late modernity analysis would predict that social class, gender, and urban-rural residence would become less prominent determinants of aspirations and expe…

Differential Effects of University and Community College Education on Occupational Status Attainment in Ontario
Research into occupational status attainment in both the United States and Canada has largely ignored the effects of type of post-secondary education on occupational status outcomes. This study has utilized a longitudinal database tracking Ontario residents in order to examine the nature and extent to which graduates of community colleges achieve lower status occupations than their university counterparts. Reported occupations were recoded into B…

The Institutionalization of a Profession
A cross-cultural comparison of midwifery in Great Britain and the United States reveals its successful institutionalization in the former and failure in the latter country. Struck by this comparison, a sociological analysis that employs historical data centered in three classes of data— normative, political, and compositional—was conducted Two hypotheses were generated through this analysis which may prove generally useful for testing in moderniz…
Self‐assessment in the early educational attainment process
