Advancing maternal health equity: The need for cultural awareness and inclusivity in maternity service delivery in the UK: anchored in the MBRRACE-UK 2025 findings
Despite ongoing national efforts to improve health outcomes, the UK continues to experience entrenched inequalities in maternal mortality, disproportionately affecting Black, Asian, and migrant women. The MBRRACE-UK 2025 report reaffirms that these disparities are not random but rooted in structural deficiencies within the maternity service delivery system. This commentary argues that achieving maternal health equity requires a fundamental shift …
Bridging sexual and reproductive health service gaps for people with disabilities in conflict-affected zones in Africa
Sexual and reproductive health remains largely inaccessible to people with disabilities in Africa, and these inequities are magnified in conflict settings through displacement, disrupted services, and heightened violence. Despite global frameworks such as the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Sustainable Development Goals, disability inclusion is often absent from humanitarian sexual and reproductive health responses. …
Maternal healthcare utilisation among women with disabilities in Lagos, Nigeria
Globally, 16% of people live with a disability, with higher prevalence in low- and middle-income countries. In Nigeria, the prevalence was 13.2%, with Lagos State recording the highest. Maternal mortality remains a major concern in sub-Saharan Africa, which accounts for 70% of global maternal deaths. Women with disabilities face additional barriers to maternal healthcare, increasing their risk of adverse health outcomes. This study examined the p…
Disability & protective sex: Women's disability status and negotiation for protective sex in Nigeria
This paper examines the interrelationship between women's disability status and their ability to negotiate for protective sex in Nigeria, where women with disabilities face gender-based and disability-related marginalisation, which is associated with limited access to resources and well-being. The study uses data from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. The analysis focuses on 15–49-year-old currently married or cohabiting women, usin…
Burden, Regional Trends and Risk Factors of Breast, Cervical, Uterine, and Ovarian Cancers in Sub-Saharan Africa, 1990–2023: The Global Burden of Disease 2023
Background: Sub-Saharan Africa is undergoing a rapid epidemiological transition marked by a growing burden of non-communicable diseases, including breast, cervical, ovarian, and uterine cancers, which constitute major causes of morbidity and mortality among women in the region; however, comprehensive assessments of long-term trends and regional heterogeneity remain limited. This study examines the burden and temporal trends of breast, cervical, o…
Measuring and addressing violence against women with disabilities in Africa
Violence against women with disabilities (VAWDs) in Africa is a significant issue, with women facing higher risks of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence. However, data on VAWD are scarce, hindering effective policy development. Challenges include the lack of disaggregated data by sex and disability, methodological gaps and the absence of culturally relevant measurement tools. Common tools such as the Washington Group Short Set on Functioni…
Prevalence and determinants of HIV testing among adolescent girls and young women in 28 sub-Saharan African countries
HIV and AIDS remain a major global public health issue with the largest burden in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in the sub-Saharan African region experience intersecting vulnerabilities that may increase their exposure to HIV, while also constraining their engagement with treatment and care. HIV testing is crucial in the AIDS response for both prevention and treatment. Therefore, understanding HIV te…

Leaving no one behind: Addressing the sexuality of people with disabilities
Addressing the sexuality of individuals with disabilities is important within the framework of global health and societal inclusivity. Despite comprising 16% of the world's population, this demographic faces sexual autonomy inequality. Acknowledging this intersection is pertinent for achieving inclusive healthcare and upholding the commitments of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development and the 2006 United Nations Conventio…
For me, it is for longevity and making sure I am fit and around for my children”: Exploring motivations and barriers for weight management among minoritised communities in Medway, England
The results of this study indicate that structural and person-level factors serve as both facilitators and barriers to weight management among ethnically diverse communities in Medway, England. While our study is exploratory and opens doors for more studies among the population, we conclude that these minoritised communities could benefit from more equitable, tailored weight management programmes to support them in adopting weight-related practic…

A multi-level analysis of prevalence and factors associated with caesarean section in Nigeria
The choice of caesarean section (CS) plays a significant role in maternal and neonatal health. However, suboptimal CS uptake suggests unmet obstetric care leading to adverse maternal and neonatal health. Considering that maternal health problems in Nigeria remain a public health problem, this present study aims to assess the prevalence and multilevel factors associated with caesarean section among women of reproductive age in Nigeria. Data from t…
Is intimate partner violence vertically transmitted among women in sub-Saharan Africa? Evidence from demographic health surveys between 2010 and 2019
This study concluded that women whose mothers experienced IPV were more likely to have experienced IPV. Our study also identified that education, rural areas, and female-headed households were protective factors against experiencing IPV. To address the groups of women at higher risk for experiencing IPV, we recommend ensuring that girls complete their education to promote greater wealth and resources
I am not really into the government telling me what I need to eat”: Exploring dietary beliefs, knowledge, and practices among ethnically diverse communities in England
The results of this study indicate that strategies to improve access to healthy foods are required to improve healthy dietary practices among the study population. Such strategies could help address this group's structural and individual barriers to healthy dietary practices. In addition, developing a culturally responsive eating guide could also enhance the acceptability and utilisation of such resources among communities with ethnic diversity i…
