Ambivalence and Resistance: A Study of Management in a Concertive Control System
This research contributes to our understanding of control and resistance by demonstrating that managers may be constrained by the very concertive systems of control that they enact and that managers may subtly and indirectly support employee resistance to control. This study examines the characteristics of worker identification with two targets at the same time: the workers' self-managing team and the larger organization that created the teams. We administered the Organizational Identification Questionnaire in such a way as to tap levels of identification with each target and used the results of an ethnographic study of the subjects to enhance our analysis. This study analyzes communicative (and therefore organizational and managerial) aspects of the Marshall Space Flight Center's second metamorphosis—from Saturn V to Skylab. MSFC's consistent successes are attributed to the organization's commitment to communication systems, its technical integrity, and its single‐minded purpose
