Tailored interventions recognizing community strengths and addressing specific health issues are crucial for improving outcomes in marginalized communities, necessitating a health-in-all policies approach considering social, cultural, and structural determinants of health
The prevalence and predictors of vaping quit attempt among electronic cigarette users
This study provides novel information on the prevalence and factors associated with e-cigarette quit attempts among e-cigarette users in Vietnam. The findings highlight the importance of harm perception, cost, and social influence in motivating individuals to quit e-cigarettes
Perceptions and intentions regarding Iqos among current US adults who use cigarettes and/or electronic nicotine delivery systems
Across tobacco use groups, there was varied interest and inclination to try IQOS and thus varied potential use as a complete substitute for cigarettes
Association between E-Cigarette Advertising Exposure and Use of E-Cigarettes among a Cohort of U.S. Youth and Young Adults
Youth and young adult (YYA) use of e-cigarettes increased rapidly between 2010 and 2019 in the United States, during which exposure to e-cigarette advertising was also increased. We aimed to examine whether exposure to e-cigarette advertising among YYAs may lead to subsequent e-cigarette use. A cohort of 3886 YYAs ages 13-24 was recruited from two survey panels in 2018 and followed up until 2019. Survey data were collected online and by telephone…
When I Don’t Have a Cigarette It’s Helpful, but It Really Don’t Satisfy
Continued research is needed to maximize any harm reduction potential of ENDS and ensure that these products do not contribute to worsening health disparities
Brief report on Iqos point-of-sale marketing, promotion and pricing in Iqos retail partner stores in Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Our study revealed a considerable amount of POS marketing and promotion for IQOS/HeatSticks at retail partner locations, visible to all retail consumers, including youth and non-smokers. This study was the first to examine IQOS POS marketing and promotion in the US context and findings add to the extant literature on IQOS global marketing strategies. As additional novel tobacco/nicotine products continue to enter the market, targeted monitoring o…
Impact of Little Cigars and Cigarillos Packaging Features on Product Preference
Regulating packaging-related features will impact LCC choices among US young adult smokers. FDA regulation over these packaging-related features may impact LCC use among young adult smokers
"You have to vape to make it through"
Objectives: Outcome expectancies are central to explaining health behavior and have been shown to predict tobacco use. Research on outcome expectancies for e-cigarette use among youth is scarce but increasingly important given the growing rates of use, particularly of high-nicotine pod devices and the recent outbreak of e-cigarette related lung disease. Methods: In 2019, we conducted 3 focus groups with middle school youth (N=25), 5 with high sch…
What Motivates Smokers to Switch to ENDS? A Qualitative Study of Perceptions and Use
Switching completely from cigarettes to electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) may reduce health risks for addicted smokers. This paper provides information about perceptions and other factors that may influence smokers' ENDS use and substitution for cigarettes. We conducted 12 online focus groups ( N = 61) among smokers who had never tried using ENDS (Never Users, N = 11), currently used both cigarettes and ENDS (Dual Users, N = 21), used b…
Constructing and Communicating Covid-19 Stigma on Twitter
This study focuses on stigma communication about COVID-19 on Twitter in the early stage of the outbreak, given the lack of information and rapid global expansion of new cases during this period. Guided by the model of stigma communication, we examine four types of message content, namely mark, group labeling, responsibility, and peril, that are instrumental in forming stigma beliefs and sharing stigma messages. We also explore whether the presenc…
Perceived risk of electronic cigarettes compared with combustible cigarettes
Our study offers evidence to suggest the need to use both direct and indirect risk questions when assessing the public's perceptions of harms associated with novel tobacco products
Iqos debut in the USA
Following the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) April 2019 authorisation on their premarket tobacco product application,1 Philip Morris (PM) has officially launched its heated tobacco product, IQOS, in the USA in October 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. IQOS consists of a charger and a holder, into which tobacco sticks, called ‘HeatSticks’ in the USA, are inserted (figure 1). The blade in the holder heats tobacco in a HeatStick, producing an aerosol.…

Objectives. To evaluate recent levels and trends in trust in sources of health information on e-cigarettes in the United States. Methods. We obtained data from nationally representative samples of adults in 2015 (n = 5389), 2016 (n = 5273), and 2017 (n = 5389) that reported trust in 13 sources of health information on e-cigarettes in the United States. We used weighted linear regression models to examine temporal trends in trust levels. Results. …
Measuring the Impact of Environment on the Health of Large Cities
The relative significance of indicators and determinants of health is important for local public health workers and planners. Of similar importance is a method for combining and evaluating such markers. We used a recently developed index, the Urban Health Index (UHI), to examine the impact of environmental variables on the overall health of cities. We used the UHI to rank 57 of the world’s largest cities (based on population size) in low- and mid…
The Association between Potential Exposure to Magazine Ads with Voluntary Health Warnings and the Perceived Harmfulness of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS)
(1) Background: Several brands of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) carry voluntary health warning messages. This study examined how potential exposure to ENDS magazine ads with these voluntary health warnings were associated with the perceived harmfulness of ENDS. (2) Methods: Risk perception measures and self-reported exposure to ENDS ads were obtained from the 2014 Georgia State University (GSU) Tobacco Products and Risk Perceptions …
Affect, risk perception, and the use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes
In developing models explaining tobacco use behavior, or in creating public communication campaigns aimed at curbing tobacco use, it is useful to focus not only on the reason based predictors, such as perceptions of risks and benefits, but also on affective predictors. Educational efforts aimed at further smoking reductions should highlight and reinforce negative images and associations with cigarettes
Awareness and use of heated tobacco products among US adults, 2016–2017
Awareness and use of HTP in the USA are increasing. These products are more familiar to men and younger adults and may be being used disproportionately by racial/ethnic minorities. With increases in HTP availability and the potential for reduced-risk claims ahead, surveillance of patterns and consequences of use by both smokers and non-smokers is needed
Worldviews and trust of sources for health information on electronic nicotine delivery systems
Public health agencies, the news media, and the tobacco/vapor industry have issued contradictory statements about the health effects of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). We investigated the levels of trust that consumers place in different information sources and how trust is associated with cultural worldviews, risk perceptions, ENDS use, and sociodemographic characteristics using a nationally representative sample of 6051 U.S. adults…
Prevalence and Factors Associated with Smokeless Tobacco Use, 2014-2016
The prevalence of current STP use peaked in 2015. In 2016, current STP use was more prevalent among males and adults with lower education. Continuous monitoring of STP use is needed, particularly non-cigarette tobacco product users
Reassessing the importance of ‘lost pleasure’ associated with smoking cessation
The proportion of smokers who might be characterised as having a preference to continue smoking are greatly outnumbered by addicted, discontent and concerned smokers who want to quit and regret ever having started to smoke. These discontent smokers could have a substantial net welfare gain if new regulations helped them escape their concerns about the health effects from continuing smoking
Improvement of Geographic Disparities
Use of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems among Adults with Mental Health Conditions, 2015
Adults with mental health conditions (MHC) are especially likely to smoke and experience tobacco-related health disparities. Individuals with MHC may also use electronic nicotine delivery devices (ENDS) at disproportionately high rates. However, there is a relative dearth of knowledge regarding ENDS use among individuals with MHC. In a large representative sample of U.S. adults ( n = 6051), associations between self-reported MHC diagnoses and END…

A Person-centered Approach to Studying the Linkages among Parent–Child Differences in Cultural Orientation, Supportive Parenting, and Adolescent Depressive Symptoms in Chinese American Families
Cultural and Contextual Influences on Parenting in Mexican American Families
Family stress theory can explain associations between contextual stressors and parenting. The theory, however, has not been tested among Mexican Americans or expanded to include cultural-contextual risks. This study examined associations between neighborhood, economic, and acculturative stressors and parenting behaviors in a sample of 570 two-parent Mexican American families. Results support the negative impact of economic stress on parenting thr…

Leveraged Resources and Systems Changes in Community Collaboration
Most models of community collaboration emphasize the ability of diverse partners to come together to enact systematic changes that improve the health of individuals and communities. The ability of these groups to leverage resources is thought to be an important marker of successful collaboration and eventual improvements in community health. However, there is a paucity of research addressing linkages between systems change activities and leverage…
