Auditory Snapshots From the Edges of Europe
This article presents thirty ‘auditory snapshots’ from a wide variety of geographical locations and contexts in order to elaborate several points. First, we believe that the study of history cannot be separated from the study of sound, whether in the form of ‘soundscapes’ or pieces of music. The A. examines one event in the expressive culture of the Jewish community of Boston, the celebration of the holiday of Simh at Torah at the Tremont Street Synagogue in Cambridge. He shows how music ritual is invented to integrate superculture and subculture identity and how, at the same time, the overlay of non-standard tunes onto sacred text creates interference that underscore how difficult it is to blend two identities
