The Excavation and Research Works at Limyra (Lycia) 2024
Archaeological Sources and Civic Life
This chapter addresses archaeology as a source for the civic life and the urban infrastructure of the Greek poleis in the Roman Empire. In its first part, the chapter introduces different conceptual approaches, such as ‘Romanization’ or ‘globalization’ versus ‘glocalization’, that help us to grasp the idiosyncrasies of these cities within the wider framework of urban culture in the Roman Imperial period. The second part of the chapter discusses d…
The Excavation at Limyra (Lycia) 2023
Introductory Remarks (M. Seyer)As in the previous years, the research focus in the 2023 season was laid on the urbanistic development of Limyra from the Hellenistic to the Byzantine periods (for a plan of the ancient city: Seyer et al. "The excavation at Limyra (Lycia) 2019," 220, fig. 1). The excavation in the western part of the city was continued as the primary activity. As had already become clear in the previous excavation campaigns, especia…
The Bouleuterion and its environs in Early Imperial Aphrodisias
Research on the remains of the monumental city center of Aphrodisias has been ongoing for over a century. After an Italian mission began here in 1937, 1 work was intensified from 1961 under the direction of K. T. Erim of New York University and has continued since 1990 under R. R. R. Smith. 2 While many of the projects have yielded results for the High Imperial, late-antique and Byzantine periods, our knowledge of the Late Hellenistic and Early I…

Purple‐dye Production in Lycia – Results of an Archaeozoological Field Survey in Andriake (South‐west Turkey)
In 2003 a substantial deposit of heavily fragmented shells of purple snails was by chance located at the site of Andriake, the ancient port of the Lycian city of Myra near Demre, in southern Turkey. The archaeozoological and archaeological record of a survey project in 2004 proved the identification of a large installation for the production of purple dye. Adjacent to a well preserved Hadrianic granary and partly superimposing the remains of a U‐…
