Building Resilience in Rural STEM Teachers Through a Noyce Professional Learning Community
Addressing the critical STEM teachers’ shortage in the rural United States requires not only recruiting new teachers but also improving retention and teacher resiliency. This study explores contextual protective factors through the Early Career Teacher Resilience (ECTR) framework. The major objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of the NSF Noyce Professional Learning Community (PLC) on rural STEM teacher resilience. Key components of…

Fear and Pride Among Fighter Pilots: Combat Emotions During a Bombing Campaign
This article analyzes the combat emotions of Royal Norwegian Air Force Fighter pilots (hereafter RNoAF) during their bombing campaign over Libya in 2011. Using grounded theory in our interviews with them, we identified 12 categories of their emotions and behaviors, with variations in pride and fear emerging as the two key themes. We show how those two emotions thread through the literature of emotions in combat, and show further how our data, and…
The rhetoric of organizational stability and creativity: An analysis of the term ‘platform’
This article analyses the term platform as it surfaced in interview data from Norway and the United States that was collected in a field research project on organizational technology use. Through an inductive analysis of the term’s use in six interviews, a conceptualization of the term reveals it to be rhetorical in nature, expressing the interplay between stability and creativity. In order to explain the rhetorical aspects we describe, the autho…

The Challenge of Doing Corporatized Research: An Ethnography of ICT Use
Two team members from a four-person research project chronicle the power relations of their experiences during a 6-year study of information and communication technologies (ICTs), showing that employing bargaining techniques and framing the corporate support as a grant rather than as a contract can help one resist and even "manage upward" the corporate influence on research. The authors also detail the micro strategies and politics of team member…
The structuring of shared voluntary standards in the U.S. semiconductor industry: Communicating to reach agreement
Although pervasive in modern organizations, standards have been neglected in organizational communications research. Qualitative study of the SEMATECH consortium revealed that an important outcome of the efforts of participants was the reflexive structuring of voluntary, cooperative standards in the U.S. semiconductor industry, which had previously operated on the basis of proprietary, competitive standards. Analysis of extensive interview, archi…
One-Way Communication Transfers in Loosely Coupled Systems
This chapter integrates the one-way transfer theory of Boulding (1973) and Mauss (1967) with the loosely coupled systems theory of Weick (1976) to advance the thesis that one-way transfers are plausible events under conditions of slack and ambiguity—the prime dimensions of loosely coupled systems. A field research project of in-depth interviews with retirees is reported in narrative form to verify past theory and to search for new theoretical for…
A grounded organizational communication theory derived from qualitative data
Communicative “incidents” in a research and development organization were recorded from interviews and observation. These incidents were assigned to “categories,” and the categories to three theoretical “clusters”: the Power‐Advancement cluster, the Power‐Pressure cluster, and the Central Figure cluster. The clusters were used to produce predictive generalizations about organizational communication
