The dark reality of health rights of interstate migrant workers in unorganised sectors
Interstate migrant workers in India represent a frequently overlooked labour demographic, often lacking adequate social security measures to ensure their well-being. While health is a fundamental human right for all, including the working class, it often becomes a low-priority concern for interstate migrant workers due to their precarious circumstances. This review paper explores the significant challenges faced by inter-state migrant workers in …
Moving the mountain
The present study examines stigma removal in the context of strategic industries. Strategic industries are critical from a national interest perspective and may not be able to engage in conventional stigma management strategies, such as concealment, dilution and coopting stakeholders, identified in extant literature. The present in-depth qualitative study of the Indian civilian nuclear energy industry, a strategic industry within the Government o…
An exploration of public risk perception and governmental engagement of nuclear energy in India
Public acceptance constitutes an important factor in successfully establishing and operating nuclear power plants. This paper explores public attitudes to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project commissioned in 2013 and situated in Southern India, through assessing the role of socio‐demographic factors, externalities, and social trust in determining the level of public acceptance. An exploratory survey ( n = 100) was carried out in two administrativ…
Nuclear Energy Safety, Regulatory Independence, and Judicial Deference
Research examining regulatory independence has either suggested de jure independence to be a predictor of de facto independence or suggested that the presence of de jure may not always indicate de facto independence. We study the Indian Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) to emphasize how AERB has enjoyed de facto independence, even in the absence of de jure independence. Using “judicial deference” principle, and through a mapping of substantiv…
Nuclear energy and risk assessment by Indian courts
Judicial intervention on nuclear energy safety discourse in India is very recent. The debate on the Civil Nuclear Liability for Damage Act 2010 in the Parliament and the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan provoked public apprehension about nuclear safety in India. The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) in South India became the flash point. The localized agitation against the project consequently gained momentum and was taken up aggres…
Spent fuel management in India
The Indian nuclear story is different from the rest of the nuclear power producing countries largely due to the unique nuclear energy path the country has chosen. The issues regarding the resultant spent nuclear fuel are also accordingly different. Based on the ideology of self‐dependence, India adopted a three‐stage nuclear energy program which envisages reprocessing spent fuel aimed at the final utilization of the vast amount of thorium reserve…
