  • Educational inequalities during Covid-19: Results from longitudinal surveys in Sub-Saharan Africa

  • The relationships between adverse life events, depression, economic activities, and human capital investment in Nigeria

Ryoko Sato, Julian Jamison et al.•ARTICLE•Medicine Conflict & Survival•2022

This paper examines the links between adverse events, depression, and decision-making in Nigeria. It investigates how events such as conflicts, shocks, and deaths of family members can affect short-term mental health, as well as longer-term decisions on economic activities and human capital investments. First, the findings show that exposure to conflict has the largest and strongest relationship with depression, associated with a 21-26 percentage…

  • Land Measurement Bias and Its Empirical Implications: Evidence from a Validation Exercise

Andrew Dillon, Sydney Gourlay et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 13

We investigate how land size measurements vary across three land measurement methods (farmer estimated, GPS, and compass-and-rope) and the effect of land measurement error on the inverse farm size relationship and input demand functions. Our findings indicate that self-reported measurement bias leads to overreporting for small plots and underreporting for large plots. The error is nonlinear, is not resolved by trimming of outliers, and results in…

  • No Condition is Permanent: Middle Class in Nigeria in the Last Decade

Paul Andres Corral Rodas, Vasco Molini et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2017

The economic debate on the existence and definition of the middle class has become particularly lively in many developing countries. Building on a recently developed framework called the Vulnerability Approach to Middle Class (VAMC) to define the middle class, this paper tries to estimate the size of the Nigerian middle class in a rigorous quantitative manner and to gauge its evolution over time. Using the VAMC method, the middle class group can …

  • No Condition is Permanent: Middle Class in Nigeria in the Last Decade

Open Access•Gbemisola Oseni, Paul Corral et al.•BOOK•2015

The economic debate on existence and definition of the middle class has become particularly lively in many developing countries. Despite this growing interest, the identification of the middle class group in these countries remains quite challenging. Building on a recently developed framework to define the middle class, this paper tries to estimate the Nigerian middle class size in a rigorous quantitative manner. By exploiting publicly available …

  • Decomposition of gender differentials in agricultural productivity in Ethiopia

Open Access•Arturo Aguilar, Eliana Carranza et al.•ARTICLE•Agricultural Economics•2015

A number of studies document gender differentials in agricultural productivity. However, they are limited to region and crop-specific estimates of the mean gender gap. This article improves on previous work in three ways. First, data representative at the national level and for a wide variety of crops is exploited. Second, decomposition methods—traditionally used in the analysis of wage gender gaps—are employed. Third, heterogeneous effects by wo…

  • Agricultural Production, Dietary Diversity and Climate Variability

Andrew Dillon, Kevin Mcgee et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2015

Nonseparable household modelsoutline the interlinkage between agricultural production and household consumption, yet empirical extensions to investigate the effect of production on dietary diversity and diet composition are limited. While a significant literature has investigated the calorie-income elasticity abstracting from production, this paper provides an empirical application of the nonseparable household model linking the effect of exogeno…
