  • Proactive Aging Among Holocaust Survivors: Striving for the Best Possible Life

    Roni Elran-Barak, Adi Barak et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Aging Holocaust survivors tended to focus on more essential/fundamental needs (e.g., health), whereas their peers tended to focus on a wider range of needs (e.g., enjoyment) in their effort to maintain the best possible life. Our findings may add to the proactivity model of successful aging by suggesting that aging individuals in Israel use both proactive (e.g., health) and cognitive (e.g., accepting the present) adaptation methods, regardless of…

Dov Shmotkin, Jacob Lomranz•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1998•Cited by: 8

This study addressed the issue of adjustment among Holocaust survivors by multidimensional assessment of subjective well-being (SWB). Participants were Israeli Holocaust survivors incidentally included in a life-span study (Group 1; n = 466) or purposely approached for studying Holocaust survivors (Group 2; n = 178). Comparison participants had immigrated to Israel before World War II, with their parents either undergoing (Group 3; n = 270) or no…

    Open Access•Jacob Lomranz•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1995

This study conceptualized family launching processes and investigated the reactions of Israeli parents to the conscription of their eldest son into the army, an event normatively initiating launching in the Israeli family. On the basis of family life cycle and adult developmental theory, parents' reactions were conceptualized in terms of two major launching-related tendencies: Holding , and Releasing . A specially constructed Holding/Releasing Qu…

A questionnaire tapping various demographic and attitudinal variables was administered to 395 men aged 40 to 55, all married and fathers. The results …

  • Attitudinal Identification, Stimulus Complexity and Retrospective Duration Estimation

    Open Access•Dan Zakay, Jacob Lomranz•ARTICLE•Time & Society•1993•Cited by: 1•References: 40

Using retrospective estimation, the reading time for social positions with which the reader identified was estimated to be longer than the reading time for positions which the reader opposed. In addition, greater complexity in formulating the social positions resulted in a higher estimated reading time. The two factors of attitudinal identification and stimulus complexity did not interact, and influenced estimated reading time additively. The hig…

  • Time orientation in Nazi concentration camp survivors: Forty years after

Jacob Lomranz, Dov Shmotkin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1985•References: 12

Temporal aspects were evaluated in 44 Nazi concentration camp survivors and 31 control subjects, all 50-60 years old. The survivors attached to the Holocaust a more intense role within time orientation; they were more past-oriented, less future-oriented, and had a generally more pessimistic attitude toward life events. Implications of the findings are discussed, with emphasis on the role of time orientation in the long-term effects of the Holocau…

  • Time Estimation as a Function of Stimulus Complexity and Personality

    Open Access•Jacob Lomranz•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1983

Following the theoretical model originally proposed by Hogan (1978), this study tests the existence of a “U”-relationship between stimulus complexity and time estimation such that time ‘filled” with simple or complex stimuli is perceived as more extended than when the same time is “filled” with stimuli that is of a moderate complex nature. In addition, the present study assumes that this relationship can be better explained by considering the per…
