Negative Contrast and Partial Reinforcement Effects as a Function of Crowded Rearing Conditions in the Rat
Two experiments were designed with the use of conventional learning situations to test the hypothesis that crowding leads to a decrease in emotionality. In both experiments, weanling rats were housed either individually or in groups of nine and started instrumental training at the age of four months. Phase 1 consisted of a 2 × 2 factorial design combining two levels of housing and either two levels of reward magnitude (large vs. small), as in Exp…
Intradimensional and Extradimensional Shifts by Jordanian Students
Experiment 1 consisted of a two-phase mandatory shift design in which 128 male and female Jordanian Ss of 4, 6, 12, and 21 years of age were shifted following criterion learning of a discrimination task to either an intradimensional shift (ID) or an extradimensional shift (ED). In the shift phase, all four values of the two main dimensions were changed but the dimensions remained the same. Experiment 2 consisted of a three-phase optional shift de…
The Effect of Aging on Reversal and Extradimensional Shifts in Jordan
A two-phase discrimination shift design was used in which 192 Jordanian subjects in the age groups 50-59, 60-69, and 70 years and older were shifted following criterion learning of a discrimination task to either a reversal (R) shift or an extradimensional (ED) shift. Like older children and young adults, subjects in the 50-59 age group executed an R shift faster than an ED shift. Subjects who were 70 years or older, however, found the ED shift e…
Failure to Obtain Positive Behavioral Contrast in the Rat Following Extended Acquisition
Each of 12 rats was subjected to a conventional three-phase behavioral contrast paradigm. No positive behavioral contrast was observed in any S, although 11 rats showed very strong extinction effects. Three rats showed negative induction, eight showed no increase in response rate in the constant component, while one rat showed first a positive then a negative induction effect. The results were discussed in terms of both Reynolds' and Terrace's hy…
A behavioral study of obedience in children
Using Milgram's original test of obedience, 192 Jordanian subjects were tested in a 2 X 2 X 3 design in which sex, two kinds of punishment instructions, and three levels of age groups (6-8, 10-12, and 14-16 years) were combined factorially. The instructions issued to the experimental group were identical to those used in Milgram's paradigm in that teacher subjects were asked to administer shock to confederate learners each time the latter made a …
Behavioral Contrast as a Function of Two Different Reinforcers
Behavioral contrast was investigated in 17 male rats in three separate experiments in which one component of a multiple schedule was associated with a sucrose solution of either 8%, 16%, or 32%, while the reinforcer in the other component was a standard 45 mg food pellet. All rats showed a higher rate of responding in the food than the sucrose component. Following extinction of the sucrose component, no contrast was obtained in any of the three e…
Abolition of the Partial Reinforcement Extinction Effect (Pree) following Extinction of the Persistence Mechanism
Three groups of rats received either continuous, partial, or zero reinforcement in a first acquisition phase which was followed by an extended extinction phase. Then all Ss were given a reacquisition phase under continuous reinforcement conditions followed by a second extinction phase. While the usual partial reinforcement extinction effect (PREE) was found during the major part of the first extinction phase, it disappeared during the last few tr…
Effects of Shifts in Delay of Reward in Rats as a Function of Reward Magnitude
Four groups of rats first received either small or large reward following either zero or 30-second delay in a 2 × 2 design. Then each main group was divided into two equal groups, one subgroup continuing on the original delay interval (resulting in a 2 × 2 × 2 design). No shift in magnitude of reward was made throughout the experiment. The results showed no positive contrast effect (PCE) or negative contrast effect (NCE) under either small or lar…
