Ear to the Earth
Ear to the Earth was an idea that grew out of a power failure on the coast of Maine while I was on vacation. Back in New York, and using acoustic ecology as a conceptual basis, I proposed environmental-sound events to colleagues at the Electronic Music Foundation. The first major festival took place in October 2006. Dr. Cynthia Rosenzweig, Senior Research Scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Center and leader of the Climate Impacts Group, pointed …
Music and Life
Music is increasingly reflecting the world around us, combining the rhythms, activities, and experiences of everyday life through electronic technology. This essay examines relevant histories in order to identify when and how this union originated. From Pierre Schaeffer to Paul Miller (a…

Since electronic instruments are not played in standard ways, and further, since rapid changes in technology lead to a steady turnover of electronic instruments, notation can not serve as a way of preserving performances of e…
The performer is us
Interactive media present new opportunities for composers to create compositions that allow members of the public, even those without musical skill, to become performers. A categorization of different types of interactive realtime music is proposed from the perspective of the performer's role
Electric Sound
The History of Electronic Music as a Reflection of Structural Paradigms
The author proposes that new and similar paradigms appear in all fields simultaneously. He posits that the two most important developments in the history of electronic music were (1) the opening up of music to all sounds and (2) the development of interactive instruments. He discusses the first development at length, suggesting ways in which it reflected general paradigm shifts in other fields. He then points to ways in which the second developme…
