  • The Anthropology of Busyness

    Charles N Darrah, Charles Darrah•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2007•Cited by: 1

Since the 1990s scholars have paid increasing attention to the competing demands of work and family in the US. The result has been a literature that focuses on time, without reference to the content of activities. This article, based on several years of fieldwork with dual career middle class families, explores the activities that drive busyness and those activities undertaken to cope with its effects. The latter include both a set of practices a…

    Jan English‐lueck, J A English-Lueck et al.•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2002

For the last ten years, anthropologists have been studying work, family and technology in Silicon Valley. The person who has the cell phone is capable of exerting control over the other family members so they're much more powerful. I bet in any house that utilizes cell phones and pagers that this is one of the issues. Control is a big thing with Pete, in our business with subordinates, and in the business he's now in there's a pecking order. They all have cell phones and they all have skypagers.

  • Workplace Training, Workplace Learning

    Charles N Darrah, Charles Darrah•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1995•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Workplace training may be viewed as an instrumental activity that can be evaluated as to its efficiency in conveying requisite skills and knowledge. This paper develops a broader analysis of training by analyzing a series of classes offered to the production workers of a computer manufacturer. The training curriculum failed in its instrumental function, and instead was used by trainees, support staff trainers, and production floor management to p…

  • Skill Requirements at Work

    Open Access•Charles N Darrah, Charles Darrah•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•1994•Cited by: 7•References: 7

The role of education in preparing the workforce is affected by the changing nature of work. The latter is typically described by a concept of skill requirements that is used to analyze jobs and workers. This concept is based upon three tenets, each of which mold our understanding of work. Fieldwork conducted in four workplaces is used to assess and critique these tenets and the picture of work they support. Suggestions for alternative analyses a…

  • Workplace Skills in Context

    Charles N Darrah, Charles Darrah•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1992•Cited by: 4•References: 8

Concerns about people who are ill-prepared to perform in workplaces of the future have resulted in various policy reports identifying basic skills, and postulating appropriate educational responses. Much of the supporting data are thin, and yield descriptions that characterize work through a limited and biased sample of possible observations. Work is made to appear unambiguous, instrumental, rational, and subject to universal categorization. Fiel…
