Rural migration and agricultural modernization. An analysis of provincial Spain during its great rural exodus, 1960–1981
Rural exodus in Spain reached its peak in the period between 1960 and 1980. At this time, the Spanish countryside also witnessed its greatest agricultural transformation. Not coincidentally, the end of traditional agriculture and the massive shift of the rural population into industry and services were two major points of the Franco regime’s economic development strategy. In any event, the rate of agricultural modernization in Spain by about 1960…
The Spanish path of agrarian change, 1950-2005: From authoritarian to export-oriented productivism
The aim of this study is to determine whether the evolution of Spain's agrarian change, between 1950 and 2005, exhibits any features important enough to differentiate it from the common model of developed countries in Western Europe. On the one hand, the Spanish agrarian transformations share the main features of the changes in Western Europe: technological innovation, increased production and productivity, the diminishing importance of the agric…
Path Dependence and the Modernisation of Agriculture: A Case Study of Aragon, 1955–85
This paper explains how technological developments and changes in production encouraged and drove the processes of agricultural modernisation that occurred in the second half of the twentieth century, taking the region of Aragon in north eastern Spain as a case study. The main agricultural macro-variables reveal a surge in output, coincident with a far-reaching restructuring of production, in which livestock and animal feeds played a key role. Th…
A World of Entrepreneurs: The Establishment of International Agribusiness During the Spanish Pork and Poultry Boom, 1950-2000
The development of intensive livestock farming in Western Europe after 1950 has been somewhat overlooked by historians, except in a number of macroeconomic works. This process has generally been understood as the application of the American agribusiness model to the European livestock sector through the direct and vertical connection between large feed companies and local farmers. Spain is a good place to test this idea, given the phenomenal expa…
