Entering medicine “on the wrong side”? Caregiving as a legitimate pathway to medicine
Medical education has increasingly incorporated curricular reforms and programming aimed at humanizing care, such as community-based service learning, experiential education, and structural competency training. However, such efforts often overlook the fact that many students already possess deep, embodied knowledge of these social realities. Some medical students come to medicine because they have caregiving experiences and an intimate understand…

Travel at the end of life
This article examines how travel figures into the coordination of end‐of‐life care. Drawing on interviews with palliative care professionals at two hospitals in the Paris region and the author's own family's experience of planning a last journey for an ageing grandfather between Pakistan and the United States, it explores the ethical, logistical and temporal dimensions of end‐of‐life travel. Palliative professionals supporting immigrant patients …
The Power of First-Generation Medical Students
When I say … haunted curriculum
As medical and health professions education (HPE) fields shift towards frameworks of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI), there has been an increased focus on addressing the environments of learning to understand hierarchies of power and create better learning experiences for students who have historically been marginalised in these fields. We propose the haunted curriculum as an evocative conceptual framing to engage with the aspects…

An accumulation of distress
This article draws on the journal entries of 62 healthcare professionals (HCP) in the United States and Canada who participated in the Pandemic Journaling Project (PJP) during 2020-2021. The HCP in this article represented healthcare fields including medicine, nursing, physical therapy, social work, and clinical psychology. In their journal entries, HCP provided accounts of witnessing the death and bereavement of their patients and loved ones; ex…
Therapeutic Apprenticeship
Introduction to the special issue 'Therapeutic Apprenticeship: Uncovering Truth and Performing Responsibility', guest edited by David Ansari and Amy Cooper
Paper Patients
This article analyses a seemingly mundane feature of a mental health centre for immigrants and refugees in Paris: the documents used by budding therapists undertaking their apprenticeships. Supervisors developed these documents in order to train therapist apprentices to learn the explanatory models of patients, identify the voice of patients, and incorporate medical anthropology into their therapeutic practice. The documents were central to the e…

Transcultural psychiatry was developed in France to promote cultural and linguistic diversity and address the mental health needs of immigrants who were excluded from accessing other public mental health services. Professionals in health and social services refer patients to transcultural psychiatry consultations when miscommunications arise or when professionals determine that patients need culturally sensitive therapy. In transcultural psychiat…
Developing and Modeling Complex Social Interventions
Objectives: Modeling the processes involved in complex social interventions is important in social work practice, as it facilitates their implementation and translation into different contexts. This article reports the process of developing and modeling the connecting people intervention (CPI), a model of practice that supports people with mental health problems to enhance their social networks. Method: The CPI model was developed through an iter…
Enhancing social networks
People with severe mental health problems such as psychosis have access to less social capital, defined as resources within social networks, than members of the general population. However, a lack of theoretically and empirically informed models hampers the development of social interventions which seek to enhance an individual's social networks. This paper reports the findings of a qualitative study, which used ethnographic field methods in six …
Senegalese religious leaders’ perceptions of HIV/Aids and implications for challenging stigma and discrimination
Senegal has been heralded as a model country in the fight against HIV/AIDS because of the low prevalence in the general population and concerted prevention efforts since the start of the epidemic. Despite its success, stigma and discrimination remain a reality for people living with HIV/AIDS as HIV transmission remains linked to lifestyle and perceived morality. Because religious teaching and the participation of religious leaders in HIV preventi…
