Jungle Dreams”
This article proposes that we revisit J.G. Ballard’s early disaster fiction—particularly The Drowned World (1962) and The Crystal World (1966)—as well as the scholarship surrounding it, with closer attention to Ballard’s race politics and the coloniality and postcoloniality of his settings, characters, and symbols. I consider Ballard’s preoccupation with Africa and the African diaspora, as well as his contribution to the colonial imaginary of “Af…
White Supremacy, “Colored-ness,” and Queerness in Oliver Hermanus's Skoonheid / Beauty
In 2011, Oliver Hermanus's Skoonheid / Beauty became the first Afrikaans film to screen at Cannes. Depicting a white Afrikaner patriarch whose life is thrown into disorder when he becomes infatuated with the son of an old friend from the army, the film links the racial and cultural essentialism that informs some versions of South African whiteness with coercive heteronormativity and homophobia. My analysis begins with a scene in which the protago…
Complicity, entanglement, and translation
Using Mark Sanders’ definition, Afrikaans is a “complicit” language, both in terms of the assistance it has given to apartheid, and in the way it evidences cultural and linguistic entanglement. But the texts examined in this article, J.M. Coetzee’s In the Heart of the Country (1977), Antjie Krog’s Country of My Skull (1998), and A.H.M. Scholtz’s Vatmaar (1995), also show a keen awareness of English’s role as an instrument of cultural imperialism.…
The Language of Ham and the Language of Cain
The “coloured” South African writer Adam Small has made an important and largely unrecognized contribution to anti-apartheid literature in Afrikaans. His pioneering use of “Kaaps” (a linguistic variety spoken by “coloured” Afrikaners at the Cape) in his poetry and plays complicated the racial designation of Afrikaans as a “white” language and challenged the dominance of the “white” Afrikaans literary tradition. In a literature where the variety u…
Nationalism and the Farm Novel in South Africa, 1883–2004
From Schreiner's The Story of an African Farm (1883) to Van Niekerk's Agaat (2004), the farm novel has reflected South Africa's experience of colonial conflict, white supremacy, gender struggle and nationalism. Revisited at key historical moments, the farm novel describes a deterministic relationship between genre and ideology, drawing attention to the role a particular fictional mode has played in justifying the disenfranchisement of blacks and …
