Spiritualism in Plaster
This article discusses the case of French spiritualist philosopher Félix Ravaisson, best known today for his philosophy of habit and his influence on thinkers such as Boutroux and Bergson. Ravaisson was not only a philosopher but also a civil servant, painter, educator, art theorist, and archaeologist. Here I reconstruct his research on the Venus de Milo, the Hellenistic statue housed in the Louvre, where Ravaisson worked as a curator. Ravaisson …

A Pragmatist Philosophy of History, written by Marnie Binder
Introduction
Early American pragmatism was an attempt to question the philosophical conceptions of the human being inherited from modern European philosophy. This revision of the philosophical canon was deeply tied to the social, cultural, technological, and political changes that shook the structures of modern societies in the 19th century, disclosing unforeseen potentialities, unregulated powers, as well as social feelings of alienation, anonymity, and repr…
Taking History Seriously
Memory, Folk Narratives, and Social Critique
The article focuses on the link between memory, folk narratives, and critical thinking. I suggest in particular that there are instances in which the transmission of a folkloric story, such as a legend or a tale, can intersect with a person’s life experiences and facilitate the articulation of critical perspectives on society that might otherwise go unexpressed. The opportunity for discussing this idea is offered by the work of early twentieth-ce…
Il primato dell'esperienza. La critica della cultura nel pragmatismo
Habit, contingency, love
This article proposes a comparison between one of the major figures of French spiritualism, Félix Ravaisson, and the pragmatist philosopher Charles S. Peirce. While there seems to be no direct historical connection between the two authors, their philosophies display striking similarities, in particular with regard to the link between the problem of habit and the problem of determinism. Both authors resort to habit when considering the role of cha…
From Vague Symbols to Contested Concepts
This article explores Walter Bryce Gallie's notion of “essentially contested concepts” from a viewpoint that has hitherto been neglected, namely its relation to the philosophy of Charles S. Peirce. As a matter of fact, Gallie was an authoritative reader of the American philosopher. All areas of his work are influenced by his attempt to take up and further articulate a major insight of Peirce's semiotics, namely the idea that symbols are inherentl…
Genesis and Geltung
Tullio Viola – One of the most relevant aspects of your intellectual career is your reflection on the link between historical and normative arguments with regard to values. This reflection goes back at least to your 1997 book The Genesis of Values, and may be seen to culminate in the methodological chapter of your 2011 book on The Sacredness of the Person, in which you talk about the need for an “affirmative genealogy” of values. As you have made…
Histoires pragmatiques
Based at the EHESS in Paris, Simona Cerutti and Yves Cohen are among today's most authoritative advocates of a "pragmatic" or "pragmatist" approach to historical research. By these terms we mean both a focus on the practices of actors as an object of study, and a methodological concern for the ways the actors themselves justify those practices on the level of theory. The way "histoire pragmatique" has drawn on classical philosophical Pragmatism w…
Pragmatism and the Writing of History
The contributions presented in this symposium explore, from different perspectives, the relationship between pragmatism and history, that is, the empirical study of the human past. These connections run deep, and may be assessed on several counts. First of all, many pragmatist philosophers have devoted a great deal of attention to investigating the nature of historical knowledge and its relevance to philosophy. Classical pragmatists such as Peirc…
The importance of being at variance
Das bildnerische Denken
"I do not think I ever reflect in words: I employ visual diagrams [...]"

Peirce and Iconology
I]t is the belief men betray, and not that which they parade which has to be studied." This short Peircean sentence has been the subject of important yet underrated attention in the reception of Peirce's philosophy, passing through the art historians Edgar Wind and Erwin Panofsky and arriving finally at Bourdieu. This paper explores the affinities between Peirce's and Panofksy's thinking, as well as their historical connections and their common s…
Philosophy and the Second Person
In this paper I begin by considering Peirce's early fragments on personal pronouns as metaphysical categories, and I then use some consonances with the work of Wilhelm von Humboldt to construe Peirce's oeuvre as part of a tradition of studies which, halfway between philosophy and linguistics, reflects on personal pronouns as universals of human communication. Upshots of this move are, first, a new point as to the relation between Aristotle and Pe…
