  • Will make a good Admiral’: A reassessment of Captain Scott's naval career

    Open Access•George H Lewis, George Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

In his book Scott and Amundsen (1979) Roland Huntford described Captain Robert Falcon Scott R.N. as ‘not well thought of in the Service’ and ‘an obscure, rather dull torpedo lieutenant with mediocre prospects’. A myth has subsequently arisen that Scott was forced into Antarctic exploration as his only route to naval promotion. For each category, the essay offers and describes a small number of standout examples that, taken together, give a far more complete view of the work of this artist than the body of his commercially released work does alone

    Open Access•George H Lewis•ARTICLE•Popular Music•1991•Cited by: 4•References: 5

In the early 1970s, in the American Island State of Hawaii, popular music began a transformation that was, to some extent, similar in form to what occurred on the American mainland ten to fifteen years earlier, when popular music first merged with the civil rights movement and then with the anti-Vietnam movement. Hawaiian popular musicians, reacting to the commercially slick music of the tourist trade and the Wai Ki Ki nightclubs, reached back to…

There have been, since Becker's pioneering work in the field of jazz (Becker 1951), a small handful of empirical studies that have focused on the popular musician in society - most specifically with respect to the conflicts such musicians can feel between what they want to play and what is demanded of them by their audience and the larger commercial market. Becker pointed out the vast differences between the expectations of the audience, those of…
