Impact of a decision aid for drivers living with dementia: A parallel-group quasi-experimental study
Not all drivers living with dementia need to cease driving upon diagnosis. However, early planning for driving retirement is recommended. To guide and support decisions and early planning for driving retirement, there is a need for person-centered resources. This study aimed to test the effects of a dementia and driving decision aid for drivers living with dementia. The primary outcome measured was decisional conflict. Secondary outcome measures …

This article presents an archival 11-page manuscript written by John M. Carmody in 1958, housed in the Carmody Papers at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library in Hyde Park, New York and offers insight into American perspectives on the Soviet Union’s First Five-Year Plan. Common and Dissociable Neural Activity After Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Relaxation Response Programs
OBJECTIVE: We investigated common and dissociable neural and psychological correlates of two widely used meditation-based stress reduction programs. METHODS: Participants were randomized to the Relaxation Response (RR; n = 18; 56% female) or the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR; n = 16; 56% female) programs. Both programs use a "bodyscan" meditation; however, the RR program explicitly emphasizes physical relaxation during this practice, w…

This study shows that MBSR is a safe and effective treatment for PTSD. Furthermore, MBSR treatment is associated with changes in brain regions that have been implicated in PTSD and are involved in extinction of fear responses to traumatic memories as well as regulation of the stress response

Estimating the A boriginal Population in Early Colonial A ustralia: The Role of Chickenpox Reconsidered
N oel B utlin radically altered the debate about the pre‐colonial A boriginal population when he provided a set of hypothetical demographic scenarios, which nonetheless were both grounded in economic theory or human ecological considerations and broadly consistent with what we know about the historical record. This research builds on B utlin's legacy by exploring how his scenarios are consistent with both the medical understandings of the infecti…
Barriers to Qualitative Dementia Research: The Elephant in the Room
As our population is aging, the global prevalence of dementia is rising. Recent extensive reviews of the dementia literature highlight a clear need for additional qualitative research to address the experiences of people with dementia and their carers. To date, the vast majority of published dementia research is quantitative in nature and, perhaps not surprisingly, attracts the bulk of government funding. In contrast, qualitative dementia researc…

Weekly Change in Mindfulness and Perceived Stress in a Mindfulness‐Based Stress Reduction Program
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to examine weekly change in self-reported mindfulness and perceived stress in participants who completed an 8-week course in mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR). METHOD: Participants were 87 adults with problematic levels of stress related to chronic illness, chronic pain, and other life circumstances (mean age = 49 years, 67% female) participating in MBSR in an academic medical center. They completed…

The toronto mindfulness scale: Development and validation
In this study, the authors both developed and validated a self-report mindfulness measure, the Toronto Mindfulness Scale (TMS). In Study 1, participants were individuals with and without meditation experience. Results showed good internal consistency and two factors, Curiosity and Decentering. Most of the expected relationships with other constructs were as expected. The TMS scores increased with increasing mindfulness meditation experience. In S…
Mindfulness: A proposed operational definition.
There has been substantial interest in mindfulness as an approach to reduce cognitive vulnerability to stress and emotional distress in recent years. However, thus far mindfulness has not been defined operationally. This paper describes the results of recent meetings held to establish a consensus on mindfulness and to develop conjointly a testable operational definition. We propose a two-component model of mindfulness and specify each component i…

A Next Step for Catholic Theology
“Catholicism will again have an exciting, frontier theology if it probes non-Christian religious experience ... from the still point of its own mystical tradition. ... The experiential highpoints in non-Christian religious traditions, if engaged, would pressure Catholic theology to review, renew, and perhaps reform its own symbols mediating between numinous experience and confessional doctrine.”
