Trends in Theory and Research in Social Education from 1973 to 1997
TRSE is used as a source of trends in social studies education inquiry over the past 25 years. There is a 60% − 30% balance between empirical research and theory articles, and 10% split between research reviews and methodological works. Quantitative research dominated early, but has waned; qualitative research has increased. Curriculum, learning, and teaching studies are roughly equal, with a recent upsurge in teaching research. Using Computer Databases in Student Problem Solving
This article describes a study in which the authors combined information from case studies of eight social studies teachers and their students to describe how teachers used computer databases to aid student problem solving, what students learned from the experience, and what enabled and inhibited effective use. Findings emphasized the importance of time constraints and pressure, prior student knowledge, use of cooperative student groups, and the …
The American School in the Political Socialization Process
This review addresses the question: What is known from empirical studies about the effects of schooling on the political socialization of American youth? The school curri…

A longitudinal design included 339 students from nine schools who responded to questionnaires from their sophomore to senior years from 1974–76. Using multivariate analysis of variance, it was shown that the extent to which students perceived open social studies classroom climates over this period was related to increases in political trust, integration, and interest, but a decrease in sense of political confidence

An Analysis of the Relationships of Selected Educational Variables with the Political Socialization of High School Students
The attitudes and actions of the pupil in a democratic school environment are to be transferred to the society when he becomes a citizen. In school, the pupil is exposed to, and becomes able to critically analyze and deal with, the political and social controversial issues of the day; he later uses these skills in his performance as a citizen. Such is one model of the school's function in political socialization of youth. John Patrick (1967) disc…
